The title should explain it all. I’m officially on hiatus. Sorry for being inactive but honestly at this point I really don’t think I’m worried too much. I planned to do some reviews but that’ll have to wait. I’ll resume starting in August but as of now after a year of posting one month off is within my rights. More to come, maybe.

Koi Kogarete was BENI’s 3rd single. It was released on June 10, 2009 and reached no. 70 on th Oricon Weekly Charts with 1,266 copies sold.

Koe Kogarete - BENI

Tracks:
1. Koi Kogarete
2. CRUISE the WORLD
3. FOREVER 21
4. Koi Kogarete (Instrumental)

Review:
BENI never ceases to amaze me and Koi Kogarete doesn’t disappoint. It’s a semi-sultry sensational R&B song comprised of soft acoustics, sensual synth, and naturally some claps for the beats. While it’s not as catchy or attractive as Kiss Kiss Kiss it is better than Mou Nido to… It’s mid-tempo and extremely easy to listen to. The chorus is particularly catchy especially with BENI’s sultry vocals. At one point it sounds ordinary but just as that happens the melody captivates you, it’s an extremely catchy thing. And although the lyrics are about one sided love I still love this song.

As much as I love R&B I will always love electronic/synth songs. That’s probably why I love CRUISE the WORLD. It still has a little R&B flavor but it’s still mostly electronic and it even has a hint of dance. It sounds a little edgy with all the beats and distortions and some of the background vocals. As for BENI’s well they’re amazing as usual. Like many other dance oriented songs it’s infectious. I actually prefer this to the title track.

She’s gone from R&B to dance and now to pop with FOREVER 21. Whenever I think of FOREVER 21 I think of overpriced clothes for girls which might be why I really don’t care for this song. It’s got some soft beats and light pop music. The piano chords and synth sound great but that’s really it. It’s just way to pop for my taste.

Overall Review: Koe Kogarete was sweet R&B bliss. At this point nothing can ever top the infectiousness of Kiss Kiss Kiss but this single can come close. It’s got that wow factor that makes it so memorable and catchy. The title track is pretty good as far as R&B goes and BENI looks amazing yet again. The B-Sides were both good and bad in some respects. Guess it depends on what you like, dance or pop? Another fine single for BENI’s new era.

After an amazing 9 days in Costa Rica I’m back in the states! Unfortunately my flight got to the airport late in Miami and my flight left without me so i stayed in a hotel overnight and then after 3 flights i finally returned home at. But my right ear still hasn’t popped yet so I’m in pain right now, nothing some painkillers can’t cure but still. So reviews will hopefully continue tomorrow. Sorry I didn’t post much but I had to sleep. Yeah so while I haven’t updated the reviews pages in a while you can expect BENI, Bonnie Pink, Yousei, DAI, mihimaru GT, and maybe some Stephanie.

Beautiful was Mai Kuraki’s 32nd single. It was released on June 10, 2009 and reached no. 1 on the Oricon Daily Charts. The title track was used in Kose Cosmeport’s Salon Style CM.

Beautiful - Mai Kuraki

Tracks:
1. Beautiful
2. wana
3. Beautiful (Instrumental)

Review:
I’m gonna come out and just say it, Beautiful is well in one word beautiful. It’s essentially a piano ballad accompanied by a symphony of stings, along with soft R&B beats. The mid-tempo verses somehow sound incredible with the beats and the background vocals and Mai’s own vocals. And the chorus, well it’s impressive. It truly is beautiful, even with the background vocals, most of which are in English. The music is far more elegant sounding and regal than the verses and Mai’s vocals are lovely. They just go so well with the music. The one downside however is that I don’t think this is her most memorable song. I’ll go into more details in the overall review section.

I love ballads but wana lit. Trap is true to Mai’s R&B roots. Despite its use of the strings and piano the hip-hop music and R&B beats distinguish it as a prominent R&B song. Overall it’s pretty mid-tempo and pretty modern, annoying background vocals and all. Honestly it could’ve been better, there’s nothing that pops out at me.

Overall Review: Beautiful was astounding, yet a letdown. Honestly I love ballads but this one is just lackluster. It does sound great but it’s not all that memorable. The melody just isn’t all that powerful, and the melody pretty much makes the song, along with the actual music which in this case was good. But the point is she needs a solid melody that sticks with you. And as for wana, well I love the R&B but that’s about it. It’s not all that memorable either. It needs some work and a better melody too perhaps. As a whole it sounds classical and amazing but it lacks that essential “wow” factor that it so desperately needs. It’s a step down from PUZZLE / Revive.

Gentle Beast Interlude June 15, 2009

From the title I’m sure everyone who’s a loyal reader can infer that it’s time for another break. Yes I know I’ve been extremely lazy but after a year of posting like crazy and school and exams you’re pretty much dead, which is what happened to me. So I know that it’s a bad time to leave and go on a break since I just posted two days in a row. But I have some good news. I’m hoping to review a few singles and maybe Bonnie’s ONE before I leave, and from there it’ll be posted every few days, mostly two days in between posts.

As for the reason, well I’m going to Costa Rica, again! It’s my second time and I’m going to have so much fun, hopefully. I’m leaving tomorrow, it’s 9 days and I won’t get back until June 24. I still plan to do my annual mega-review of BEST COUNTDOWN G which will include singles and albums from January 1, 2009-June 30, 2009. Check back every once in a while, some reviews might surprise you, or not.

Kimi ni Aitaku Naru Kara June 14, 2009

Kimi ni Aitaku Naru Kara was Kana Nishino’s 6th single. It was released on June 3, 2009. This was her final single prior to her debut album LOVE one.

Kimi ni Aitaku Naru Kara - Kana Nishino

1. Kimi ni Aitaku Naru Kara
2. Shitsu Koi Modo feat. WISE
3. Again

Review:
I’m not quite sure what SONY’s motives are but I’m guess they’re really promoting Kana and her debut album especially with Kimi ni Aitaku Naru Kara. It’s her final single in the era as well as probably the single that’ll help push the album. It’s another signature track from Kana, featuring the piano, light R&B beats, and naturally some synth. From there it’s pretty relaxed and easy going until the chorus. It’s with the chorus that the song seemingly comes to life. Things speeds up a bit and the melody is a little more exciting at this point. And I love her vocals during this point, the back-to-back vocals were surprising and yet wonderful. The whole mid-tempo aspect of it all didn’t hurt it either.

I’m hoping that I got the romaji right because I haven’t seen anything else for Shitsu Koi Modo feat. WISE. This is their third time together, the first was her previous song followed by the answer song featured on WISE’s latest album, and now this is the third. The beginning is WISE rapping and it’s actually not half way. The whole strings and acoustics kinda threw me off though with the rapping. However once Kana begins to sing things settle down a bit. She sounds great but the song isn’t just all that exciting. I wasn’t too thrilled with the chorus, it sounded nice but it’s just not all that memorable. WISE didn’t even do all that much until the bridge where he actually sang alongside Kana.

Again is pretty much your average B-Side. It’s not extraordinary but it is good, not strong enough to be an A-Side though. It’s fairly different compared to her other works though. There’s more of an emphasis on the percussion yet there’s still some underlying synth and acoustics and the occasional R&B placed somewhere. It does make time go by though, especially with the cheerfully music filled with lots of beeps.

Overall Review: Kimi ni Aitaku Naru Kara is one unique single. I do like the title track, mostly because the chorus sticks out with the back-to-back vocals, which makes the entire song, that and the synth. As for the B-Sides, well they’re lackluster at best really. I mean I see no reason why WISE was even there, he did nothing for the most part but rap in English. And as for Again, well mediocre but it does sound sweet and innocent. Not her greatest work but it’s a great way to end her LOVE one Era.

Dream June 13, 2009

Dream was Yuna Ito’s 3rd album. It was released on May 27, 2009 and reached no. 7 on the Oricon Weekly Charts with 19,528 copies sold. The track LOVE MACHINE GUN was used as an insert song for the cell phone novel Tenshi no Koi. Ima Demo Aitai yo… was used to push the album.

Dream - Yuna Ito

Tracks:
1. love you
2. Ima Demo Aitai yo… feat. Spontania
3. Brand New World
4. Koi wa groovy×2
5. trust you
6. BAILA BAILA
7. BREEEEEZIN!!!!!!!
8. miss you
9. LOVE MACHINE GUN
10. No one else
11. Body

Review:
Leave it to Yuna to being her album with a track names love you. And contrary to what I thought, this song isn’t a ballad. It’s very much alive and up-beat. It has such a different atmosphere when compared to her other songs, that and different music. There’s more of an emphasis on the percussion for sure, it’s just blaring throughout the entire song. There’s some brass, but the percussion is just so overpowering. Despite the repetitive music this song does sound great. During the bridge it developed a bit of an island vibe, giving it some variety. There’s a lot of English but that’s part of it’s charm I guess. I love you I do…

Definitely one of the hottest tracks on the album is by Ima Demo Aitai yo… It was originally released as a digital single back in March and it’s currently being used to promote the album. It’s an R&B infused ballad with an elegant array of strings, both classical and oriental, and underlying synth. It’s a beautiful example of a fusion between traditional and modern music. Anyway as far as vocals go Yuna sounds amazing, lots of power and emotion, and Spontania was actually good too. There music just flowed very smoothly altogether. Best collaboration ever.

Sounds like she’s getting all of the up-beat songs out of the way early, especially with Brand New World. It was originally the B-Side on trust you and I’m ecstatic to see that it’s on the album. It’s an extremely up-beat pop song, but at the same time it’s no bubblegum thankfully. More like light synth pop with some occasional strings. It’s pretty infectious too, especially with all the English. And the distorted vocals towards the end were amazing!!!

Continuing with the up-beat songs is Koi wa groovy×2. It’s by far one of her most up-beat songs, as well as the loudest. Besides all that and the nanananana’s Yuna really displays some great vocals, loud and powerful. As far as the sound goes it’s pretty much a pop song, keyboard chords, percussion, some brass, and lots of catchy beats. And it was an island vibe to it. Pretty catchy and unforgettable, just don’t overdo it.

I’m not sure what she was thinking when she placed trust you right after Koi wa groovy×2. On one hand you have a spectacular ballad and the other an extremely up-beat pop song, contradictory but that’s Yuna for you. Despite the bad placement I have to say that I still love this song. It’s rather traditional for a ballad featuring the strings, piano chords, and naturally some R&B beats. The background vocals actually fit well along with Yuna’s own vocals, which were actually quite powerful at a few points. Spectacular and dazzling ballad.

The second new song on the album after a while is BAILA BAILA. Not sure what she was going for as far the song goes but music wise it’s extremely island driven. Lots of brass that simulate island music, Caribbean specifically. Sadly that’s the most exciting thing about this song. After the music it’s pretty ordinary. I did like her vocals and how refreshing the music sounded, whistling and acoustic guitar, but that’s it. Not much of a melody either sadly, kinda hinders the whole thing.

For some reason unknown to me I just LOVE BREEEEEZIN!!!!!!!. Perhaps it’s the island arrangement that’s up-beat. Or it’s the extremely infectious melody and lyrics during the chorus, probably the chorus. I just love the sound of it for some reason. Switch this with trust you and the album flows a lot better.

After mostly pop songs we finally come to another ballad. miss you has actually grown on me quite a bit. It’s still a solemn and somber ballad but this time it seems more beautiful and lovely. The acoustics somehow resonate with the vocals better along with the accordion. And now I can appreciate the melody more than ever. It sounds a lot better after a few months.

Even though LOVE MACHINE GUN has been out for a while, being and insert song for the cell phone novel Tenshi no Koi. I really wasn’t all that excited about it but now that I’ve heard it I have to admit that it’s just that amazing. It does take a while to get used to but after the first minute this song sounds superb. I guess she decided to tackle the rock genre this time because she’s used the guitar a lot, along with the percussion and brass. The vocals are muffled a little just like Ayu in Rule. But at the same time there are points where she sings unaltered, and when she does it sounds impressive and uplifting. The chorus is a mixture of catchy English and Japanese that really make it stand out, and the melody is top notch. It’s got to be her greatest album-only track.

At this point I’m pretty sure that Yuna can’t hear. It’s one thing to misplace maybe one ballad but three is too many. She really missed it with No one else. On the bright side she does make up for it with this enchanting R&B flavored ballad. Maybe I shouldn’t say R&B but to some extent it does sound R&B, but it’s more string drive with various acoustics and beats. It’s actually a very epic song that’s just phenomenal when it comes to arrangement, especially during the bridge with the guitar riffs and the awesome vocals, she really surprised me. It’s a shame that it’s a little too short though.

More hip and far more dance oriented is Body. The dance music is euphoric, synth oriented and has an island vibe, a toxic combination. The rhythmic claps are a little annoying but it does grow on you. I’m not entirely thrilled with the talking instead of singing but she does make it sound good somehow. I find the music to be relaxing and at the same time energetic in its own way. The chorus was the highlight of the song and did it sound fantastic. It’s actually quite catchy. She’s tackled yet another genre and that suites her.

I’m sure the majority of people were wondering why Body was so long. In case you didn’t know it was because of groovy×2. It’s actually a hidden track and it’s sung by none other than Cristine Ito aka Yuna Ito. After a lengthly intro it pretty much turns into the English version of Koi wa groovy×2. Same instrumentals and everything but as with most Japanese songs that are covered the lyrics are changed. And like most covers this song falls flat. It’s one thing when you take the melody and alter it and change the music like Bentley Jones but when you just replace English with Japanese it just stinks. Anyone remember BoA’s GoT???? Remember who corny it was??? Well think that but more up-beat and pop. Epic failure.

Overall Review: Dream was an AMAZINGLY CHEERFUL HAPPY album! Okay perhaps I’m exaggerating a bit, but it was a great album. For my first album from Yuna Ito I have to say that I’m impressed. Overall there’s such an overwhelming sense of celebrations and a festival mood, I realize it’s worded awkwardly but you get the general idea. It’s just a very up-beat festive album with a few ballads here and there. The strongest asset was the fact that the majority of the songs were generally pop and up-beat, and most had some island vibe. However the placement was just terrible. I mean it’s one thing to misplace a ballad, but it’s worse when it’s after an extremely joyful and up-beat song. And not only once but twice, or three times depending on how you look at it. If the ballads were grouped together with Ima Demo Aitai yo… beforehand it would’ve been a lot better. As for the ballads, they were spectacular, and so heart wrenching at the same time. So despite the horrible placement this album was phenomenal!!! Can’t wait for her next release.

KiSS KiSS xxx June 5, 2009

KiSS KiSS xxx was MiChi’s 3rd single. It was released on May 27, 2009.

KiSS KiSS xxx - MiChi

Tracks:
1. KiSS KiSS xxx
2. WoNDeRLaND?
3. Smells Like Teen Spirit
4. ChaNge the WoRLd [remix]

Review:
MiChi was on a roll for a sec but honestly, she’s fallen just a tad with KiSS KiSS xxx. I do like this song but it’s just so repetitive and similar to her previous single. She’s still focusing on dance/synth pop which is one of my favorite things about her. Not surprising she uses a lot of English throughout the song. And as always her vocals are crisp and clear. As far as music goes, there’s a few guitar riffs, keyboard etc, basically synth pop. I’m not all that thrilled with the melody overall though, it’s not the most exciting thing. But I did love the bridge, lots of soft English lyrics. She could’ve done worse, but I wish she did better.

How you’d describe WoNDeRLaND? is beyond me. The harmonica and acoustics make it sound country but there are still some synth pop/rock elements, still so abstract and…unique. There’s really nothing to special about this song, not even her vocals sound all that great. It just moves a little too slow for me.

I’ve heard references to the this song but I’ve never actually heard it, call me uncultured if you will. MiChi is actually covering Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit. The original was pretty much a rock song I’m guess and this song sticks to the original I guess, not sure about sound but genre wise it does. The song sounds rather dark and dreary but it’s from Nirvana. Her English is great but her vocals are drowned out a tad by the music.

I honestly have no clue what she was thinking when she had this remix placed on this single. I loved the original version of ChaNge the WoRLd but this remix has killed it. There are a lot more distortions, lots of synth/techno/electronica and even some background vocals. It almost sounds like something from Ayu’s NEXT LEVEL with all the electronic music. The point is, it SUCKS. It’s become way too choppy and way too annoying.

Overall Grade: KiSS KiSS xxx was EPiC fAilUre, okay not really but it was a step back. I like that she’s continuing the trend of synth pop because it’s what she does best. However she does need to give it some variety, I mean her last three singles are essentially the same when it comes to sound, and even lyrics give or take. She just needs to come up with something new. And honestly her B-Sides suck this time. The cover was so-so not all that exuberant, and the remix was just horrible. Perhaps her next single will bring us something better.

again was YUI’s 14th single. It was released on June 3, 2009. The title track was used as the opening theme song for the anime Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.

again - YUI

Tracks:
1. again
2. Sea
3. SUMMER SONG ~YUI Acoustic Version~
4. again ~instrumental~

Review:
After her not so epic album and a B-Sides compilation YUI is back in action! I”m sure most of us agree that YUI was way too repetitive with her last studio album, yet SUMMER SONG was such a breath of fresh air. And I have to say that I’m am so thrilled that she took a hiatus, it really seems to have worked for her. After nearly a year of no singles she’s released the epic and extraordinary again. I can exactly put my finger on it but for some reason this song sounds remarkably different from all her past works. It might be the oscillating rhythm, shifting from mid-tempo to breakneck in seconds. The guitar still plays a vital role but she varies it and makes it sound unique and so new. And the way she varies her vocals is mesmerizing and she really displays her excellent vocals, which I haven’t heard in a while. And I guess the tone doesn’t hurt either, it’s not so up-beat and acoustic like her previous singles.

YUI’s gotten a lot better with her song writing and has grown as an artist, it’s really shown through with Sea. It’s a laid-back mid-tempo song that’s similar to a ballad yet still has that signature YUI sound. The acoustic guitar plays a role as do the drums. Everything about this song is pretty much laid-back and relaxing. The atmosphere is completely different than the previous song, it’s more calm rather than fast and in a rush. And on another note, I loved the strings, a nice little touch.

And as always we have the YUI Acoustic Version, this time it’s SUMMER SONG. The original was pretty much an acoustic song with just a little more instrumentals like an organ I believe and some percussion, etc. This version has pretty much sucked out all the fun and excitement, leaving it pretty dull. It’s just not nearly as exciting as the original. Yet it still has some charm leftover.

Overall Review: YUI might need to take another hiatus after this, it seems to do wonders for her. again is far much better than more of the singles she’s released to date. The arrangement is far more original and sounds a hell of a lot better than her last works. She’s definitely come back with a bang. again is by far one of her greatest works, again it’s mostly because it sounds so unique and epic. As for the B-Side, I was fairly pleased. It’s different because it’s more laid-back and calm, yet it’s still better than some of her A-Sides. Her acoustic version of the last single was mediocre. That’s the only problem I have with this single. Overall it’s one of her strongest singles to date.
