Dear… / MAYBE was Kana Nishino’s 8th single. It was released on December 2, 2009 and reached no. 7 on the Oricon Weekly Charts with 17,258 copies sold. In all this single has sold over 24,551+ copies.

So leave it to Kana to release one of the first winter singles of 09. And true to most winter singles, Dear… is indeed a ballad. She’s still establishing herself as an R&B artist so it’s no surprise that there are some R&B elements in this song besides the strings and ballad instruments. The melody wasn’t the greatest, but still solid. Overall it’s just a lovely winter ballad, pretty epic as well as dramatic. And Kana’s vocals are pretty sweet as well.

Now as much as I love ballads, I will always love pop songs, especially those with auto-tune. She sounds like she’s reverted back to her LOVE one. Era with all these distortions, but I LOVE them. So that’s why I adore MAYBE. It’s basically your average pop song with lots of synth, keyboard chords, classical elements, and up-tempo music. Yeah not gonna lie, it’s infectious, and quite additive. The chorus is by far the best thing, great hook and melody that makes for an impressive combo.

So the B-Side was originally included on an m-flo tribute album that was released a month or two ago. I didn’t pay much attention to Yours Only but I thought since it was with Kana’s no. 1 collaborator WISE it’d be good. It’s not what I expected. It wasn’t all that strong of a song. It was a great ballad, especially once the rhythm picked up. And the vocals were pretty nice too. I still prefer Tookutemo.

Final Thoughts: For her 1st true winter single this is a solid single. Some things could have been improved. If Dear… had been a bit stronger with the vocals, and if the song had been a lot more dramatic it would have been better, however the song is still quite memorable. And MAYBE, is just WOW. Then again I’m biased to anything that uses auto-tune for those distorted vocals. It’s not the most cohesive thing, perhaps if both had been ballads it would have been a tad bit better, but the different genres make it better. It won’t immerse you into that winter wonderland filled with happiness and snow, but so far it’s the closest thing. Excellent single Kana, great followup to Motto…, even if you do look a tad white xD
