It’s pretty hard to describe this song. SUMMER TIME GONE isn’t like her past R&B songs. It’s more like a fleeting pop song, with a hint of R&B. The piano, strings and percussion make for an interesting sound in this song but it works. Her vocals are nice, and I love the slight distortions during the verses, sounds almost creepy, and it reminds me of Halloween somehow. It’s just an interesting song to say the least. That “SUMMER TIME GONE” line in the chorus is quite catchy though, and it makes it sound so sad. Although I did love listening to this while watching Case Closed.
anywhere was a bit of a surprise. The echoes of “anywhere” and the distortions as well as acoustic riffs were enchanting though. But right off I loved the distorted vocals from Mai, they sounded cool. And when it got to the chorus it was amazing, it might not have been fast or anything but it sounded wonderful. It flowed rather nicely, the electronic elements mixed with the acoustics was pure genius. It’s not the best B-Side but it comes pretty close. And it was catchy as well.
This single was something unexpected from Mai. It’s completely different from her. Rather than her usual R&B style she’s decided to go with something that’s more pop and electronic influenced. It’s a nice change but I wonder what this will mean for her next album FUTURE KISS. It’ll be interesting that’s for sure.
