For You / Time Limit

For You / Time Limit was Utada Hikaru’s 6th single. It was released on June 30, 2000 and reached number 1 on the charts 451,640 copies sold. In all it has sold over 909,000+ copies. This was the third single in the Distance Era. The track Time Limit was remixed by Rodney Jerkins, hence the Darkchild in the music which serves as trade mark. This was also her second double A-Side, and this was the only single from the Distance Era not to sell over 1 million copies.

Review:
For You the R&B, light ballad. A lovely piano plays as the song begins, followed by some heavy R&B beats and Hikki ad-libbing. Hikki then begins to sing in Japanese. I find the first few verses quite addictive and so fantastic. But the chorus is the best. The melody is very catchy and it sounds so up-beat. The little use of English also gives this song a nice little touch. And I love the English voice after the chorus, so creative. This song is also on the lighter of the songs, and consequently the weaker. It’s still good, but compared to the latter track, it’s somewhat weaker.

Although Time Limit is a light R&B song, it’s aweome. This song was arranged by Rodney Jerkins, hence the Darkchild in the song. This is also my favorite song on the single. The chorus was very infectious in the R&B sense, and it’s so catchy. The melody was hard to forget, and the piano keys were memorable. The verses are pretty good too, Hikki’s vocals really shined through. The use of English makes this song even better than before. The constant beats of this song help give it that distinct R&B vibe. And the ad-libbing was great. Overall this is my favorite track on the single, mostly because of the music and lyrics.

Overall Review: For You / Time Limit was R&B passion with some American flare. The only thing that I didn’t like that much was For You, it’s still a good song but it didn’t do that much for me. This really shows you just how R&B influenced Hikki’s music was all those years ago. Overall this is quite the single in my opinion and if you love Hikki’s older style this is the single for you. Another great single for Distance.
