Dareka no Negai ga Kanau Koro
Dareka no Negai ga Kanau Koro was Utada Hikaru’s 13th single. It was released on April 21, 2003 and it reached number 1 on the charts with about 150,000+ copies and managed to stay number 1 the following week with about 82,000+ copies. In all it has sold more than 365,206+ copies. This single is was released when singles and album sales were declining due to Japan’s economy slowing down. And I’m using the DVD cover of the single, I think it looks a lot better than the regular cover. This was also the second single in the ULTRA BLUE Era.
1. Dareka no Negai ga Kanau Koro
2. Dareka no Negai ga Kanau Koro (Instrumental)
Dareka no Negai ga Kanau Koro lit. When Someone’s Wish Comes True, the ballad of sorrow. This song is perhaps one of Hikki’s most emotional and saddest ballads. In the song the lyrics mentions that not everyone’s dreams can come true at the same time. But also when you hear it, the song makes you so sad, you ask yourself “Why is there so much pain and suffering in this world?” In my opinion it’s one of the deepest songs that she’s written. Now this song is entirely back by the piano with some acoustic guitars and a cello. The chorus here sounds so dark and yet still so beautiful and profound. It was also used in her husband’s, now ex, debut film Casshern.
Overall Review: Dareka no Negai ga Kanau Koro was such an amazingly profound single. It was filled with emotion and power, and it was just so beautiful. You don’t hear many songs like this one, so enjoy. I really wish that there was another song with this single but even without it it’s still amazing. Another perfect emotional ballad for Hikki’s discography and for ULTRA BLUE.
