Flavor Of Life

This is the first review of my blog!!! Big thing for me since I’m new to this. Ok, it will take me a while to get used to this so please be patient.

Utada Hikaru released “Flavor Of Life” on Febuary 28, 2007. This is also her 18th single. The ballad version would be used as the end song for a popular Japanese drama, this is one of the reasons why it has done so well. Withing the first week of its release it would chart number 1 and go on to sell over 270,000 copies, out selling her singles from Be My Last to Boku wa Kuma. It also managed to keep the number 1 position for 3 weeks straight. An amazing feet that was last done by Ayumi Hamasaki’s “Voyage.” In total this single would go on to sell over 645,000 copies making it the number 2 single of the year. This was a big comeback for Hikki in terms of physical and digital sales. The Flavor of Life also managed, both versions included, to sell over 7,700,000 digital downloads. Quite impressive for one single. And it was the 2nd single in her HEART STATION Era.

Review:
Flavor Of Life, the simple yet fantstic song. On thing you can tell  is that Hikki used her more experimental pop type of music for this song. One of my favorite parts about this song is that it’s so up-beat, well the sound of it anyway. The lyrics are very deep. The chorus is very catchy and somewhat fast you could say. The instruments are a guitar and synth beats. Because of the popularity of this song it was included on Hikki’s HEART STATION album as a bonus track.

Flavor Of Life -Ballad Version- the ending song for a popular teen Japanese drama. The PV was set to this song too. I first heard this song in January of 07 and was completely blown away at how amazing it was. It is, as stated above, a ballad. Hikki’s voice is so calm when singing and it goes great with the song. This version is slower and back by an orchestra rather than a guitar and synth beats. Her voice is also lower than in the original version. This version is also featured on her newest album HEART STATION.

The Antidote Mix was a CD Only Exclusive. It means you get it by purchasing the physical cd. This remix has more of a R&B feel to it. It sounds a bit scratchy at first but it leads into an amazing mix. You can hear the R&B in it with all the snaps and drum beats, i think. Her voice is distorted a bit but it makes it better in my opinion.

Overall Review: Flavor Of Life was one of Hikki’s best singles in terms of physical and digital sales. They speak for themselves. And the best part was that there were 3 versions to chose from. What a comeback for single for Hikki, even though see really doesn’t need a comeback.

Final Grade: 100A+

Well that was my review I hope you all like it.

  1. […] Flavor Of Life -Ballad Version- need I say more? This song was released as a single along with the original version of Flavor Of Life. But this was the song that was used as an insert to a popular drama. This is by every sense a ballad. Hikki’s voice sounds deep during the verses and yet high during the chorus, a beautiful combination. The music is an array of a piano, acoustic guitar, and an orchestra of strings. The chorus is so beautiful and mesmerizing. The lyrics talk about how it’s painful when you say “thank you” and that the unbreakable magic after “good bye” is weakly bittersweet. This is one of her best songs in years as far as ballads go. For the full review, click here. […]

  2. […] HEART STATION single, certainly not my favorite though. But then included was the ballad version of Flavor of Life, amazing epic hit. Then came the double A-side singles, both incredible. Beautiful World was the […]
