Time for my annual BEST ~Countdown~ the mega review where I pretty much rank the best of the best, from singles to albums. This review being the -Singles Edit- will feature the Best Singles of 09. The albums will be posted later this year, hopefully by the end of next week. So without any more hesitation let’s begin the BEST ~Countdown~!

BEST 10 A-Sides of 2009

null

trust you – Yuna Ito

This song was just phenomenal. It’s IMO her best ballad to date, and I just loved her vocals, so much power. And the music was just awing. Doesn’t hurt that it was in Gundam 00 either.

null

Nande Nakitaku Nacchaundarou – Miho Fukuhara

I personally think that she’s one of the freshest faces of J-Pop, and one of the most unique. She’s almost like ayaka meets Joss Stone, songwriter + husky voice. And this particular song was up-beat and jazzy, and just plain fun. One of the catchiest feel-good songs of the year.

null

Kuon no Kawa – alan

Clearly before her fall from grace, which you all know what I’m talking about, this is her most epic ballad. It even managed to reach no. 1 on the Daily Charts, if that’s not impressive enough I don’t know what it.

null

ECSTASY – Koda Kumi

Her 3 SPLASH single was meh, but this song was damn! It’s her usual sexy/slutty Kuu and that’s why I liked it. It was sort of like TABOO meets Driving, not as good as the two combines but it’s still enough to make it one of the best A-Sides, that and the interesting PV xD

null

Sparkle – Ayumi Hamasaki

Fiercest song she’s ever released, and her techno/electronic/dance music was just insane, too bad her album couldn’t have been as good. The music was intense, lots of crazy beats, and I couldn’t get enough of the “No no no…’s”

null

Dr. – Namie Amuro

This song is spacey, far-out and futuristic, which is perfect for her latest album. The changing rhythms and piano chords, along with some underlying synth made it an unforgettable track, just what the Dr. ordered.

null

After Love -First Boyfriend- feat. KANAME – Crystal Kay

Another excellent anniversary for CK. This song was an amazing R&B mid-tempo ballad that while was too short lacked nothing in the music and vocal department. I only wish that Kaname might have done more.

null

Over Load – Mika Nakashima

It looked like Mika went to rehab after VOICE, it wasn’t a bad album, it’s just that she looked terrible, she looks more like her debut self, rather than her VOICE self. Anyway this song had it all. The chorus was spectacular, the music was classical and just plain mystifying, and it was quite infectious, and she sounded great.

null

PUZZLE – Mai Kuraki

I love edgy American style R&B, especially when it’s from a Japanese singer. And that’s why Mai is up here. This song is pretty edgy, aggressive, and astounding, all at once too. The background vocals were actually interesting and kept with the R&B sound. I think Mai should stick to this genre, speedy music suites her best.

null

Believe in LOVE feat. BoA – ravex

This group is truly a genius. It’s a trio of some of the best DJs in J-Pop and they’re all here to celebrate avex’s 20th Anniversary. Anyhow this song featured BoA as the main vocalist and I did enjoy her vocals, her English has improved considerably too. The music was a mixture of classical music and dance, the synthesized strings are just orgasmic.

Honorable Mentions
ChaNge the WoRLd – MiChi
Kimi ni Aitaku Naru Kara – Kana Nishino
Kiss Kiss Kiss – BENI
Namida no Mukou – Stereo Pony
WHY – Miliyah Kato

BEST 10 B-Sides of 2009

null

Brand New World (from trust you) – Yuna Ito

I’ve always been a sucker for pop songs, and this one is no exception. Except that this song is actually good and doesn’t get stale after a few listens. Lots of beats and the synth music was great, quit infectious. One of the most memorable B-Sides of the year.

null

No Answer (from Over Load) – Mika Nakashima

This song was perfect for Over Load, it’s the perfect match. The music is softer, a little slower, and not nearly as loud or obnoxious. I loves the classical music with some of the traditional Japanese strings and other acoustics. It just goes on flowing quite well. And the bridge gave me chills xD it was just that good.

null

Destiny (from WHY) – Miliyah Kato

This is without a doubt my favorite track from Miliyah. It’s one of her best R&B ballads. The synth was amazing too, no overkill in this case. The beats were incredible, piano chords were perfect, and above all the melody was top notch.

null

stardust (from Zutto Futari de) – BENI

I really could care less for the title track but this B-Side rocked it. It was a tad out there with the synth music, but the infectious beats and synth riffs made it come to live, even the acoustics were nice. It’s just a very infectious song, quite fast too, and her vocals were pretty good too.

null

Amethyst (from Unlock) – mihimaru GT

I’m not sure if I even reviewed this song (O.o) but nonetheless it was amazing. The classical strings, the hip-hop-esque music at times, the piano chords and the nasally vocals; I loved all of it. It sounds completely different from just about every song I heard this year, it’s by far one of the most interesting.

null

Doyara kyo mo Shibuya Made (from PRESENT) – Rie fu

I HATED this single, well the title track for the most part. But I loved this B-Side. It’s more folk music than anything. Rie fu got back to her roots which is what I enjoyed the most. It was soft, acoustic, and peaceful.

null

Dub-I-Dub (from Reincarnation) – Ami Suzuki

I don’t think many people enjoyed this single, and it’s not hard to hear why. But most loved her cover of Dub-I-Dub. It’s a great dance song and her cover was awesome. The beats were great, the music was danceable, and her English could have used some work but she’s come pretty far. I just love dance songs with synth (^-^)

null

Let’s get together at a-nation (from ∞1) – Do As Infinity

I don’t care what you say. I know this song was far out and really different from anything they did but I liked this song. The distorted vocals were cool and somewhat spacey at times. But I loved how it was rock with some electronic, quite the combination. And I don’t think anyone can argue that it wasn’t catchy?

null

Negai Hoshi (from Friends!) – Tamaki Nami

It was either this or Konojo and this won, although both are equally good. It’s basically a techno/dance song with some great music, dance naturally with some synth. The music actually reminds me of some of the songs from Ayu’s many remix albums. Either way it’s catchy and enjoyable.

null

Sea (from again) – YUI

So YUI can’t smile, who needs to? She does, but since her music is good I’m fine. Yeah so Sea is somewhat of a serious song. It features guitar riffs, acoustics, percussion, and even some strings. It’s not the catchiest thing but I most appreciate the song’s overall sound and composition. One of her finer tracks.

Honorable Mentions
You and I (from Joy / Happy Ending) – BONNIE PINK
Beauty (from Swear) – alan
Golden LUV feat. MAKI GOTO (from Believe in LOVE feat. BoA) – ravex
Sherie (from MAKE UP) – Kana Nishino
CRUISE the WORLD (from Koi Koegarate) – BENI

WORST A-Sides – Get ready for the firestorm xD

null

Hashire! – Koda Kumi

This song was just a piece of crap that was a waste of space, clearly Kuu needs to stick to either ballads or sexy/slutty songs.

null

CANDY GIRL- Mika Nakashima

Just look at the picture, need I say more?

null

Seeds of dream – GIRL NEXT DOOR

You’ve sounded too much like day after tomorrow for far too long. And your songs are getting stale, especially this one.

null

Swear – alan

This was the song that pretty much turned alan into the Chinese Ayu, shame on avex. And it was mediocre attempt at a pop song that served no purpose. Even the B-Side Beauty was better.

null

Believe in LOVE (Acoustic Version) - BoA

This song basically turned the amazing synth driven song into a piece of shit. It lost everything that made it amazing and that made it stand out. It wasn’t all that interesting or remotely good.

null

Sunset ~LOVE is ALL~ – Ayumi Hamasaki

Do I really need to get started on you? You attempted to make a nice song with the same melody you used to make a summer pop sensation. That’s why this song fails.

null

GIVE ME UP – Tamaki Nami

And you! You know what you did. Don’t even get me started on you.

B-Sides? None because B-Sides are always B-Sides and tend to vary too much.

And just because I can, I’m adding another section, this one’s about how much the artist has or hasn’t failed this year with singles.

BEST WTFs / Random Stuff

nullKoda Kumi - REALLY??? You’ve been in J-Pop for how long and you’re still producing shitty singles, consecutively I might add. After her TRICK Era things have pretty much gone down hill. I honestly didn’t care all that much for It’s all Love! it was mediocre at best. As for 3 SPLASH, if it wasn’t ECSTASY it would have been a complete flop, god knows most of us couldn’t stand Hashire! I don’t think that Alive was one of her greatest works either, if it wasn’t for sexy Kuu and Physical thing it would have flopped even more, despite reaching no. 1 on the charts. And at this rate her next single is gonna suck too, all I can say is that Universe better be good.

alan – She started out strong with Gunjou no Tani, which completed her stellar debut album, and then she continued with Kuon no Kawa which in two words is “epic ballad,” clear as day. After that it was BALLAD -Namonaki Koi no Uta- which was another great ballad. But out of nowhere she pulls out Swear????? It’s a like a big WTF happened? Can someone say Ayu??? I think that avex is transforming his simple Tibetan into the Chinese Ayu, which is both good and bad, but I won’t get too much into it. Oh and 2nd album, rushed.

Let’s not forget the Empress now. Ayu’s single were sufficient. She kicked ass with Rule / Sparkle, some of her fiercest works. But then she released Sunrise / Sunset ~LOVE is ALL~. It’s not that it’s a bad single, it’s just again mediocre. She did surprise us with the two melodies being the same, but both songs could have used some work. And then she releases yet another winter single, right after a summer single too. And honestly while I liked it, it could have been a hell of a lot better, I actually think BoA did a better job with her winter single. All I’m saying is that Ayu isn’t using her full potential, and it’s quite sad.

Now lets get to the infamous GND. I’ll admit that I did enjoy their debut album, and few singles for a while, but it’s getting a bit too stale, singles are starting to sound even more recycled and even older. They need to get their act together with NEXT FUTURE or their PAST > FUTURE.

Tamaki Nami has had her ups and downs this year. At first I think I actually liked her debut single under Universal, but now it’s a piece of crap, and only the B-Side was good. Her singles aren’t selling all that well and eventually I think she’s gonna be screwed over by her management yet again, such a waste of talent.

Now I haven’t really gone into too much detail but I do like Stereo Pony, as most of us know, they’re a band of three girls, each plays a different instrument and they’re decent. I haven’t reviewed much from them, I probably should since I like them, but I’ll wait till later. Their singles are pretty decent and overall they’re getting better, and they tend to do anime themes, which I have no problem with.

And Shoko-tan, you’ve just failed me, it’s as simple as that. Her lackluster singles and lack of variety have made me refuse to listen to anything new from her, perhaps one day I’ll remember why I liked her as an artist.

nullI doubt I’ll ever review anything from SCANDAL in the future unless they start coming out with some really good singles, but I can honestly say that they impressed me with their single Shoujo S. It’s a rock song, and I’ll admit that I really didn’t like it that much, even when I heard it as the theme song to Bleach, but eventually it grew on me. It’s pretty catchy, a tad bit aggressive, and I love the lyrics, being selfish is quite fun you know.

Miliyah Kato has been full of surprises this year. I was thoroughly impressed with her two latest singles this year, and I also plan to review album, which I think it’s safe to say I’ll find to be superb.

That was my review! Hope everyone finds it somewhat useful. And this is only the first part, the second part should come out sometime next week. And DAMN this reviews take forever, especially with all the images involved. And as you can see I was too lazy to get any pictures for the last section, maybe I’ll add some later.

BEST COMPILATION ALBUMS

BEST FICTION – Namie Amuro

2008 as a whole has been a big year for Namie Amuro. She released as no. 1 single, her first in over 9 years and she released her third compilation album. BEST FICTION includes all her singles from Wishing On The Same Star to 60s70s80s, making it her best compilation to date, and did I mention there were two addition new songs? The first is the sexy synth R&B Do Me More and the second is the thumping R&B Sexy Boy. Anyway, this album features some of her best hits since 2002 which makes it worth while. And it managed to chart at no. 1 on the charts for 6 straight weeks, beating out Koda Kumi’s Black Cherry(2006) and even Ayumi Hamasaki’s DUTY(2000). This made Namie become the first female solo artist to have an album occupy the no.1 spot for 6 weeks since 1979. It even became the no 2 album of the year, behind EXILE’s album, which was released back in December 07. This album also made Namie the only artist to have a million-selling album in her teens, twenties, and thirties. And to date this amazing album has sold over 1,479,288 copies.

null

A COMPLETE ~ALL SINGLES~ – Ayumi Hamasaki

Ayumi celebrated her 10th year in the music business by releasing her 5th, that’s right 5th, compilation album. This massive album was released in a 3CD Only and a 3CD+3DVD edition featuring 43 of her singles, all since 1998, and a special 10th anniversary version of Who…, the Chinese version was released on the the Asian release. The 3DVDs aren’t PVs but live performances. And although I love this album, I think it was a little odd to release an album like this since she released two compilations last year, but you know AVEX. This album also gave Ayumi her first album since MY STORY(2004) to sell over 500k in the first week, not from two weeks like (miss)understood(2006). If you don’t have any of Ayu’s albums, and can afford it, this would be one of the best compilation albums of 2008.

null

The Best of melody. ~Timeline~melody.

I can’t believe that after five years, melody. is calling it quits. This album is her first compilation album, and could be the last??? Anyway it features all of her singles and it includes two B-Sides and miss you, the collaboration with m-flo and Ryohei. Although I have to admit that I really don’t like most of her early work, with the exception of a few songs, I do love the second half of the album for the most part, when things become more of a modern pop sound. But I do love how it shows her evolution as an artist and how it shows some of her more mature works. And like most compilation albums it managed to do pretty well, charting at no. 4, her second highest charting album. Hopefully she’ll return in a year or two, perhaps even with a new label?

null

Chapter One -complete collection- – Beni Arashiro

After four years with AVEX, BENI has decided to change labels to Universal Music Japan, but not before releasing one final compilation album. This album includes all of her singles from 2004 including a few B-Sides and three new songs, making it a really good value. That being said though, it does include her earlier works, some of which aren’t all that great, but it does include some of her more recent works like the singles from GEM and so on. It even includes her cover of CALL ME, BEEP ME, which is still my favorite song from BENI. And I really glad to see that BENI has changed her name to BENI, from Beni Arashiro, and that she’s gone to Universal Music Japan. Frankly I love AVEX and all, but some of their lesser known artists aren’t really their top priority, often being pushed aside so that they can promote their top artist. At least with Universal BENI has gotten some great promotions and her latest single has reached no. 20, much better than no. 77. So fans of BENI’s old and new self, should pick up this album, it’s worth your time for the most part.

null

the brilliant green complete single collection ‘97-’08 - the brilliant green

To be honestly with you, I really didn’t know much about the brilliant green until I heard the their latest single Ash Like Snow, which was used as the second opening theme song for the anime Gundam 00. And when I heard it, I was blown away. It was very rock oriented, and pretty dark, but I love it. The explosive guitar riffs and the impressive vocals, which came from Kawase Tomoko, who sings under the pseudonyms Tommy february6 and Tommy heavenly6. Anyway, this album features their first two singles which were sung in English along with their last three singles, which were released in 2007 and 2008. As the whole, the album showcases their distinct western contemporary rock sound, as well as their newer rock sounds, which really make it amazing.

null

MY SHORT STORIES – YUI

Let’s face it, when it comes to high quality B-Sides, YUI rules. So it makes sense when YUI released her first compilation album that was a B-Sides collection. It reached no. 1 on the charts and became the first B-Sides compilation to reach no. 1 since Mr. Children’s B-Sides(2007) and the first female since Seiko Matsuda’s Touch Me(1984). And besides featuring all of her amazing B-Sides from feel my soul to SUMMER SONG. But one of the best features was that it included a brand new song entitled I’ll be. Like most of her songs it’s very acoustic oriented and somewhat up-beat, overall a great song. This album is really a must for any YUI fan.

BEST NEWS 2008

2008 has been a really big year, with lots happening. Here’s just a little review of what’s happened in 2008, as well as what might will in 2009. And just because it’s BEST doesn’t mean that it’s all good, it’s keeping with the title.

In January 2008 it was announced that Ayumi, the dubbed Empress of J-Pop had gone deaf in one of her ears. It was shocking news that really shook just about every fan. She stated that she was diagnosed back in 06, and that it has began as far back as 2000, no doubt from all of her live performances. It’s sad, but Ayumi promised to continue to work hard, and she really has this year. And she also announced that in 2009 she would release another single. This single is entitled Rule / Sparkle, the first song will be used as the theme song for the movie Dragonball Evolution, set to be released in April 2008.

One of the stupidest things that happened in 2008 was with Kuu. The night after Kingdom’s release she went on a show and stated that she wanted to have kids before 35 because at that age the amniotic fluid rots. Obviously there’s a bit more to it, but that’s the gist of it. So basically all promotions for Kingdom and her commercial endorsements were canceled. Yet Kingdom still topped the charts for two weeks. In my opinion, I think she was just stating a fact, because in truth some of it was true, but I don’t think she should have said it like that. That being said, I don’t think the Japanese media should have blown it out of proportion either, then again it’s a different culture with different values. However she did manage to comeback with MOON and then TABOO followed by stay with me, the last two were her 5th and 6th no. 1 hits.

In June it was confirmed that Maki Goto, the former pop idol, had switched to AVEX. It was pretty big news that led to a few live performances, some even at A-nation. It was a pretty big move that signaled a change in her appearance as an artist. Although she wasn’t really a pop idol in her last album, this transfer confirmed the change. And although she didn’t release any new material in 2008, she has in 2009. She’s preparing to make a full fledged comeback that should start soon hopefully.

alan debuted back in 2007, but she didn’t gain too much attention until her 5 Elements Campaign. She released five singles in five consecutive months, each representing one element. The first was Natsukashii Mirai ~longing future~ and it was used as the theme song for the special NHK TV program, SAVE THE FUTURE, which was aired for three days around World Environment Day in all NHK channels, to help raise environmental issues, she even did a few live performances. It became her first single to chart in the top 20 and became her second highest selling single. Her highest selling single is RED CLIFF ~Shin Sen~ which was used as the theme song for the popular Asian movie RED CLIFF. The campaign began in July and ended in October and proved to be very beneficial in gaining alan some wide spread attention. And soon her debut album entitled Voice of EARTH will be released.

It was also announced in 2008 that Tamkai Nami would be switching labels, from SONY to Universal Music Japan. To be honest with you, I think it’s a good change. SONY was good in the beginning with her earlier work, but towards the end it got worse. Things really went downhill for the most after her second album, but it happens. Hopefully with Universal Tamaki will have better promotions and some better material.

Beni Arashiro also decided to switch labels, for her it was AVEX to Universal Music Japan. Really the same thing applies for BENI as it did for Tamaki. Hardly any promotions and nothing good was happening for her. So it’s no surprise that she decided to switch labels. I think it’s one of the better things that happened this year. And she even changed her stage name to BENI.

Not only was Hikki voted #1 Favorite Artist of 2008 by Oricon’s readers, but she also released another domestic million-selling album, her last since 2004, it even surpassed the sales of her previous album. But besides all of that news, it was announced that she would release her 2nd English studio album under Island/Universal in 2009, and that her new single was entitled Come Back To Me. This of course got fans all hyped up about all the new material and the new images of Hikki, much different from Exodus. Hikki’s year has been pretty good and 2009 could be even better. And the poll that I placed on Jan 12 has dubbed Hikki the Official GH J-Pop Empress of 08 by getting 22 votes, which was 31% of the 72 votes. I was going to do a section on Hikki, but I’ve gotten a little lazy, hope you don’t mind.

Such artists as Kanon Wakeshima and MiChi also made their debuts in 2008. Kanon features classical music with a darker edge and did the theme songs for both seasons of Vampire Knight. Kanon’s debut single was entitled still doll, while her second was Suna no Oshiro. MiChi on the other hand is more mainstream synth pop. Her debut single entitled PROMiSE reached no. 12 I believe and has done well. Her new single is going to be released in February of 2009 I believe. And depending on how you look at it, you could say Kana Nishino debuted in either 07 or 08. Her first three singles were pretty high quality and pretty cute pop sounding, the third was used as the ending theme song for the anime SOUL EATER. The first single of 2009 for Kana is entitled MAKE UP and was released on 1.28.09, so get ready for a review.

Let’s not forget about Ami Suzuki. This has been somewhat of a mini comeback year for Ami. She announced that she would release an anniversary single entitled ONE. And ONE was an amazing single, it featured a sexier style along with a vocoder, used for altering vocals which is how she got the distorted vocals, and some techno / electronica music. She eventually released her fourth album with AVEX entitled Supreme Show, which was her 10th Anniversary Album, which charted at no. 16, much better than its predecessors, and it wasn’t a collaboration album like her last two albums. And now it’s been announced that her new single will be entitled Reincarnation; this single however won’t be produced by Yasutaka Nakata, instead it’s Taku Takahashi of m-flo.

And BoA managed to do what only Hikki has done. She’s released a mainstream English single. Although it’s digital for the most part, it has shed a bit of the spotlight on BoA. It’s entitled Eat You Up and it’s not all that bad actually. Sure it could be better, but for her first real English single, it’s not half bad. And the remix with Flo-Rider wasn’t too horrible, although it could use some work too. And her debut English album is set to be released in 2009, along with her second Japanese compilation album. Her second triple A-Side single is also set to be released soon, in February actually.

Finally the last bit of news for 08 is about Yousei Teikoku! This dark, gothic band really peaked my interest back in September. The music has a classical feel along with the rock instrumentals, with some obvious dark & eerie influences, similar to Kanon Wakeshima. This band decided to release three consecutive singles for three consecutive months, from August to October. It might not have done that much for them, but I’ve gotten back some positive feedback from this band and their new singles. And although the band isn’t all that mainstream I still like the music and the vocals. If gothic / alternative rock is your thing, you might find yourself in heaven with this band.

Well that’s it. I hope everyone has enjoyed this mega review. I know I had a good time writing it, even though it took a few hours. Comments are appreciated of course as well as suggestions. So any constructive criticism is appreciated, just don’t be too mean.

Welcome to the 1st annual BEST ~Countdown~ 2008 H. Like its counterpart BEST ~Countdown~ 2008 G, it’s a compilation of reviews for the most part of all of the singles and albums that have been reviewed. Of course these singles and albums are only from July 1, 2008-December 31, 2008. So without anymore hesitation, let’s begin! *And just a little note, for most of the singles, it’s the title track that’s really important and that’s being reviewed or honored.

BEST Singles:

Best Techno / Electronica

Dream Fighter – Perfume

This has been Perfume’s year without a doubt. After their no. 1 album, they released a single that charted at no. 1 on the charts, making history. As for this single, it’s amazing. I was debating between this single or love the world, but honestly this single here has that stronger techno / electronica sound, the latter was more cutesy pop idol. It’s pretty catchy and features some intense distortions and techno beats that make it infectious. Not to mention that the melody is just plain addicting. That’s why this is the obvious BEST Techno / Electronica single!

Honorable Mentions: Blue Vibration / Kaze no Kioku ~to the end of the world~ – Aimmy

can’t stop the DISCO – Ami Suzuki

Best Love

Romantic – Rie fu

Diverging from her past folk pop music is Rie fu with Romantic. This single is quite different from all of her past works made evident by the distorted strings and the suureal synth lines. As for why it’s the best love single, well I guess the title says about half of it. The other half though comes from the actual lyrics which are very profound and awing. Rie fu’s vocals are also mesmerizing which makes it even better, and the fact that she’s bilingual doesn’t hurt. The English is just as incredible as the Japanese if not better. I’d say that this is one of my top 5 favorites of 08 and the BEST Love single.

Best Rock

null

Kane wo Narashite – BONNIE PINK

After 2006 with A Perfect Sky, Bonnie was put back in the lime light. This single is spectacular as far as vocals and instrumentals go, as well as appearances. Anyway, it’s probably the best rock single of 08, well song I should say. It gained more attention being the Japanese version of her own Ring A Bell, as well as the theme song for a popular X-Box 360 game. It features an awesome arrangement along with the guitar, some percussion, and the occasional synth riff. And the lyrics aren’t so bad either.

Honorable Mentions: World End – FLOW

Best Dance

TABOO – Koda Kumi

I’m sure that after MOON, not many people were expecting Kuu to comeback with this sultry perfection. It’s her strongest single to date since BUT / Aishou back in 2007 but it was worth the weight. This song is her first really to feature some terrific techno beats and synth riffs, thus making it her finest dance single. But not only that, the music is so strong and the melody is catchy. It just has that incredible dance vibe. The vocals were sexy and a little naughty. As for the chorus that really made the song, well it was infectious and so so addicting. And honestly, I personally think it’s also the sexiest single of 08, especially after the two PVs released.

Best R&B

ONE – Crystal Kay

Crystal Kay is widely known for singing some great R&B songs, so it’s no surprise that her single ONE is the BEST R&B single. This smooth song is pretty soft and light when it comes to the actual beats and sound, but it’s sweet R&B nonetheless. It’s lightly infused with some snaps and the occasional percussion. The signature instrumental besides the synth riffs are the strings, which are pretty light, giving the song an up-beat feeling. Crystal sounded pretty good in this song too, she displayed some nice vocals. Although it perhaps could have been a little heavier, almost like to Mariah Carey, but I’m content for the moment.

Best Pop

Guuzen no Kakuritsu – GIRL NEXT DOOR

Created to celebrate AVEX’s 20th Anniversary was the band GIRL NEXT DOOR. They debuted back in September with the single Guuzen no Kakuritsu that features pop music. However unlike most of the pop of today, the music of GND is more like the stereotypical pop of the 90s, a throwback essentially. But despite being a throwback, it’s surprisingly good and catchy. The guitar riffs and keyboard chords provide some great music and the arrangement is just amazing. The music is up-beat and pretty catchy, the melody is so memorable. No wonder it’s the BEST Pop single.

Honorable Mentions: Style. – Kana Nishino

Best Ballad

RED CLIFF ~ Shin Sen~ – alan

Although 2007 was good for alan, 2008 has been better. She’s released 5 singles in 5 months, and each has been pretty good. But she was in her element when she released RED CLIFF ~Shin Sen~. It’s an epic ballad that’s filled with the regal strings and a variety of oriental instruments. It a song that’s one of her signature songs, and it also put her in the limelight. But besides having an exquisite array of instruments, alan displays just how powerful her vocals are yet again. They’re strong and enduring, perfect for this genre really. And her signature mountain vocals are even featured, which makes it even better. It’s definitely one of the best ballads of 08.

Best Nature

Natsukashii Mirai ~longing future~ – alan

alan began her 5 Elements Campaign back in July with the earth themed single entitled Natsukashii Mirai ~longing future~. This single really allowed her popularity to shoot up, breaking into the top 20. As for why it’s a nature single, well the PV for one and the lyrics. It was also used as the theme song for a special program called SAVE THE FUTURE, which promoted environmental issues. What made this song so special and wonderful was a multitude of things. The children’s vocals in the background and the various instrumentals were part of it. But alan’s vocals really made the song. They were strong and just what the song needed to promote a better environment, and keep nature beautiful. The lyrics go on to mention “a northern aurora, a forest’s whisper, a nostalgic future, and a blue star. ” Pretty nature themed right?

Best Foreign

GREEN / Days – Ayumi Hamasaki

Lately, as in the past three years, Ayumi has been releasing only two singles per year, and that’s physical too. And after her 10th anniversary single Mirrorcle World, she released GREEN / Days. GREEN gained a lot of attention for being used as in a CM for Panasonic and because it was heard back in August. Anyway, I loved this single so much that I had to give it something, and foreign was the best thing. GREEN is about as oriental as you’ll hear from Ayumi, well Chinese for the most part. But the song is incredible and known for it’s extensive use of the Chinese strings and instruments. And the PV was about a showgirl trying to make it big in the 30’s in China.

Best Summer

SUMMER SONG – YUI

YUI is famous for playing the guitar, electric and acoustic, and featuring it in her music. And this summer song does just that. It’s main instrument is the acoustic guitar, which is pretty amazing as far as notes and riffs go. This song is basically about the summer, the fireworks, and the blue sky. I guess the title really gave it away, but it’s pretty obvious that this is a summer single, and the best of 08. Come to think of it, I don’t think there were many summer singles, well many good ones anway *cough* MOON *cough*.

Best Winter

stay with me – Koda Kumi

Kuu’s infamous for her winter ballads as of lately, so it’s no surprise that her single be dubbed the BEST Winter single. This wonderful winter ballad is sensational and perfect for the season. The strings are epic and impressive, the piano solemn and refined. Kuu’s vocals were mind blowing, filled with power and emotion. And one of the things that makes this single even better is the fact that the B-Side was so wintery. Winter Bell was so up-beat and sounded perfect for the holidays with the jingle bells, how much better does it get than that? Well that’s why this is the BEST Winter single of 08!

Best Gothic Lolita

Hades: The bloody rage – Yousei Teikoku

Gothic Lolita covers a range of appearances, but the dark / evil look is probably the most famous. And when I say this cover and the band, that’s the first thing that popped into my mind. I guess looks are pretty important when it comes to gothic lolita, but the sound doesn’t hurt either. In this particular song, the keyboard and guitar are the main instruments, giving the song such an eerie feeling. The organ makes an occasional appearance in this dark tune. It sounds pretty classical and the background vocals make it sound ominous. And as far as looks go, need I say more? The group even released an album entitled GOTHIC LOLITA PROPAGANDA, which might be reviewed.

Best Classical

Suna no Oshiro – Kanon Wakeshima

Kanon made a splash into the world of Japanese music when it was revealed that she would sing the theme song to the anime Vampire Night. Well the single above was used as the ending theme song for the second season, and it’s pretty damn good. Like her previous single, it’s pretty classical featuring her signature instrument, the cello, and the strings. It’s darker compared to her previous single too, in terms of vocals and music. Anyway, the constant strings and cello gives the song a classical feeling that’s a little eerie too. And although it’s a little too short for my taste, it’s an incredible classical single.

Best Debut

PROMiSE – MiChi

Well she might have released an EP, but for now PROMiSE is MiChi’s debut single. The title track was used in a CM for au sports, and she even did a few live performances. As to why this single is the best debut single, well there are a few reasons. First off, she’s bilingual and that means that her English is great, which doesn’t hurt especially when you use English in your songs. The lyrics were rather optimistic and happy, and the meaning was pretty deep. Music wise, the song features some synth lines and techno beats along with some distortions, the keyboard, and guitar; making it sound pretty modern and giving it a dance feel. And finally I loved her vocals, they were so refreshing, so crisp and clear. And it charted pretty well too, she’s off to a great debut.

Best Comeback

Mou Nido to… – BENI

I’m sure most people know BENI as Beni Arashiro. Anyway, her career got off to a fair start, but slowly started to plummet and eventually she left AVEX to go to Universal Music Japan. Her last single AVEX single charted at no. 77, and that was pretty much one of the lowest points in her career, besides having her compilation album chart at no. 166. But over the summer of 08 she was featured in a single that was fairly successful and then finally she released a response single entitled Mou Nido to… It charted at no. 20, much better than 77, so that’s a pretty good comeback. Not only that but she did a live performance, which no doubt helped it. As for the song itself, it’s a typical ballad that sounds incredibly wonderful that features the strings, the piano, and the acoustic guitar. It’s really a step up from her AVEX work in my opinion, and a single worthy of the name BENI. Such an awesome Comeback Single!

Best Anniversary

ONE – Ami Suzuki

Although you could label this as a comeback single, Ami had her’s years ago and she hasn’t fallen from popularity that much. Anyway this single was released to celebrate her 10th Anniversary in the music business. 10 Years is pretty long in my opinion, but I hope she stays for another 10. This single was quite different from her past singles as it wasn’t a collaboration single, and it was produced by Yasutaka Nakata of capsule. That being said, it’s no surprise that the music was heavily techno / synth oriented. There are some amazing beats and distorted sultry vocals. The melody was topnotch and incredibly infectious. I think this single might give Ayu a run for her money.

Honorable Mentions: Kurage, Nagareboshi – Ai Otsuka

BEST Albums:

BEST Pop

GIRL NEXT DOOR – GIRL NEXT DOOR

Despite being so repetitive, GND has released an awesome debut album. It features that stereotypical pop of the 90s that’s nostalgic and just plain awesome. Some of the new songs featured some newer genres for the group, which made it excellent. The music sounds pretty similar except for a select few, but everything worked out for them. I liked how they stuck with the one genre though, much better than a few albums. That being said, it could have been a little better.

BEST Compliation

BEST FICTION – Namie Amuro

In my opinion, this has been the year for Namie. She gets a no. 1 single after 9 years, and then released a compilation album that charted no. 1 at 6 consecutive weeks. I haven’t reviewed this album, but I plan to eventually. Anyway, I won’t go into all the details because I plan to review this and a few select others at the next Countdown GH. This album contained two new tracks that are so addicting, along with her all her hit singles since 2002. It’s the best compilation album of the year because it’s Namie, it’s been years since she’s released one, the singles rock, and the two new hit songs.

BEST ROCK

LOVE LETTER – Ai Otsuka

I’m not sure what kind of artist people would classify Ai as, but for the moment it appears to be rock. Now she still does J-Pop, but for a while she’s been getting deeper into the rock genre, especially with her new album LOVE LETTER. This amazing album featured two title tracks rather than one, making it stick out. This album is filled with a variety of rock tracks, along with the occasional mesmerizing ballad, and abstract song. The rock for some parts is light but it is there nonetheless. Her vocals had some variety to them which made the album even more enjoyable. It’s one of the must-hear albums of 08, even if it is rock oriented.

BEST Awaited

Van. – Van Tomiko

Ever since her debut single back in 2006, people have been waiting for Van’s sophomore studio album. Oddly enough her debut singles and on were placed on this album, seeing as the first featured no singles. Anyway, waiting for two years makes you expect a lot, and this album delivered. It was entirely rock, but more of a fusion of rock, ballad, and the occasional jazz. The singles were just plain amazing, except for one, and the new songs were just exhilerating. I’m pretty sure now though that her solo career has ended for now as DAI has gotten back together.

BEST Contemporary

VOICE – Mika Nakashima

Things have been so hectic with finals next week and lots of stuff going on in school that I haven’t gotten the chance to review VOICE. I plan to review it before January is over, but it might be a while. Mika is known for her adult contemporary songs, and this album follows that same genre. It has some smooth jazz, a dance song, a ballad, an up-beat song, and even grudgy rock. The music is varied, but overall it’s smooth and gentle, very calm for the most part. It’s not really pop, more of a fusion of jazz & ballads than anything really, like back in the old days. It’s something that I think most adults wouldn’t mind listening to.

Best Techno / Electronica

Supreme Show – Ami Suzuki

Ami’s image has changed with AVEX and so has her music. From pop idol to techno goddess with the help of Yasutaka Nakata. Ever since he started producing her, her music has become very techno influenced and features the occasional synth beats and electronic distortions. That’s exactly what this album features, some techo music, synth beats, and awesome distorted vocals! It features the awesome ONE, TEN, and LOVE MAIL, among other hits. She’s also taken on an edgier appearance with this album too, and the photoshopping is amazing.

Fin…

Well that’s BEST ~Countdown~ 2008 H! I hope everyone has enjoyed this super review. This review just contained some of the highlights of the latter part of 2008. I know that there is a lot more, but that will appear on BEST ~Countdown~ 2008 GH, which is a mega review of 2008, and that will include everything. Some parts will be specific, some will just be the best top 10 songs, etc. So I hope this will satisfy you for now.

Best Countdown 2008 G July 8, 2008

Welcome to the first of hopefully many Best Countdowns. Here is just a little page that’ll include a few events and news of what’s happened this year, well this first half anyway. But the main purpose is for the whole Best Of… in this case it’s the Best Of the 1st Half of 08 but for writing purposes, it’d be known as Best Countdown 2008 G. The first half will contain the Best Of, while the second half will include some new blog stats. And without delay, let me begin the Best Countdown 2008 G. *Note All Music is from January 1-June 30.

First & Foremost, the Best Singles!

Best Comeback Single!

60s70s80s - Namie Amuro

60s70s80s – Namie Amuro

After a few years from fallen popularity Namie slowly worked her way back up to prominence. With the release of her latest album PLAY, Namie had suddenly gotten back in the game. With this newest single, Namie again got another no. 1 single, her first in nearly 10 years. Her popularity was reestablished after the release of this triple A-Side single. It’s currently one of the highest selling female singles to date in 2008. She’s now 30 but still singing in her prime, go Namie the Queen of Comebacks!

Best Scariest Single!

null

still doll – Kanon Wakeshima

No surprise here, this choice was quite obvious. This single by Kanon features classical instruments and disturbing background music. But then again it was produced by MANA, so what did you expect. Anyway, for a debut single this has caused quite a scare. And the title track was used in the new anime Vampire Knight, which is very good in my opinion. Here’s to Kanon, with one of the scariest singles ever.

Best Cute Single!

glowly days - Kana Nishino

glowly days – Kana Nishino

Kana took me by surprise at first with her debut single I, and from there I fell in love with her. But it was her second single that really caught my eyes. Although she cannot sing in English that well she can sing, after a few lessons she should be better. But anyway the title track was so adorable, especially when she tries to sing in English. Dream glowly days, and think of a cute and so so sweet voice. Yay for Kana and she so cute single.

Best Anniversary Single!

Mirrocle World - Ayumi Hamasaki

Mirrorcle World – Ayumi Hamasaki

Seeing that no one else released an anniversary single, Ayumi was really the only candidate and choice. But this introduction turned full song turned single was quite the single. It was released in an incredible six editions, and featured a total of two brand new songs and two anniversary editions. With this single came many promotions and even another tour of Asia. Still this single was quite remarkable selling over 146,000+ copies in its first week, the highest for a female single in 2008. But I really loved how the covers looked, not the whole topless thing, but because it seemed so natural, so beautiful and so serene. Unless another one is released later this year, this will remain the best. Ayumi does it again with this no. 1 anniversary single.

Best Love Single!

Prisoner Of Love - Utada Hikaru

Prisoner Of Love – Utada Hikaru

Despite being four to five years younger than a few of the other J-Pop divas, Hikki has broken so many records. And this time she’s won my attention again with this wonderful re-cut single, Prisoner Of Love. This single was used for the drama Last Friends, as both the theme and an insert song. It’s popularity has grown, especially on the digital charts, reaching no. 1 on Itunes Japan, and becoming another signature song from Hikki. This single features one lovely song, full of emotions all about love; and it includes a Quiet Version that features only an orchestra and a new set of vocals. But what really sets it apart from the others is the lyrics, which are so beautiful and emotional. Leave it to Hikki to create such a lovely and heartfelt single.

Best American Sounding Single!

Love Paradox - Leah Dizon

Love Paradox – Leah Dizon

Leave it to an American to have an American sounding single right? Well out of all of the singles, this one sounds the most American, and being from an American artist I guess it’d only make sense. This American style R&B song features some distorted synthed vocals, that sounds pretty good. The English was impressive and the Japanese was straight on. Despite not doing that great on the charts this is definitly one of the best American sounding singles, as of yet anyway. Leah is very cute and very good with her vocals.

Best Cute Lyrics, Morals, & PV Single!

null

Girigiri HERO – mihimaru GT

This single might look a little strange but it’s good nonetheless and it contains some very cute lyrics, morals, along with a great PV. Now the lyrics are about a person who helps one person, even though they’re a “barely qualified HERO.” It’s really all about how you don’t need a flashy costume to or any powers to be a hero to someone, corny and cheesy but true. With some great lyrics, English and Japanese, and the corny yet true moral, this single is so great. And as for the PV, well it’s so cool! It was one of the top videos on Itunes Japan and it’s no wonder. In the video it features a grown man who helps all kinds of people, even though he’s barely qualified. But in the end, he’s a really great hero. mihimaru GT has outdone themselves with this creative single.

Best Electronica / Techno / Dance Single!

Baby cruising Love / Macaroni - Perfume

Baby cruising Love / Macaroni – Perfume

After changing producers this group started steadily to gain attention, until finally they released this single which managed to reach no. 3 on the charts. Perfume is well known for their producer Nakata Yasutaka, and their often distorted vocals. And in this single it’s all about distortions, great techno pop and the occasional electronica vocals. But I must say that this single sounds so good, distortions and all. Yasutaka has done it again with these lovely ladies and there fantastic electronica / techno single.

Now for the Best Albums!

Best Dedicated Album!

GUILTY - Ayumi Hamasaki

GUILTY – Ayumi Hamasaki

After countless no. 1 singles and albums Ayumi released GUILTY. Despite this album reaching no. 2 on the charts it did become a very beautiful album. The album was dedicated to a friend of Ayumi’s who passed away earlier in the year and she even wrote a song for her. But the point is that this album was full of emotion and power, but most importantly it was one of the best dedicated albums, but come to think of it I have no clue how many other’s were dedicated to other people. But still this is no. 1!

Best Disappointing Album!

Kingdom - Koda Kumi

Kingdom – Koda Kumi

Countless promotions were prepared for Kuu-Chan’s latest album, however the album turned out to be a huge disappointment. After Kuu’s controversy the album’s sales seemed to plummet, selling about half as many copies as her previous album. And the quality of the album wasn’t that great. I was expecting so much, but all it was was a huge disappointment.

Best Flop Album!

THE FACE - BoA

THE FACE – BoA

BoA might have ruled the world of J-Pop as a princess in the early 2000’s but it seems that as time’s gone by her popularity has faded to an all time low. Her latest album was a prime example of what’s happened in music industry, falling sales. The album itself was rather enjoyable but the sales were anything but that. This album is her lowest selling Japanese studio album, and the singles from this era were a huge disappointment sales wise. Maybe her new tour will push this flop.

Best Popularity Decline Album!

Don\'t Stay - Tamaki Nami

Don’t Stay – Tamaki Nami

This hasn’t been Nami’s year to say the least. After releasing Graduation ~Singles~, her first best album, she began her new era. Now the new era didn’t begin that great, her first single failed to chart in the top 20. Her next single was a moderate success, but the last was a total flop, barely making it to the top 20. But in 2008 she released Don’t Stay, her fourth studio album. With virtually no promotions the album reached number 14, making it her lowest charting album considering her two previous albums had been no. 1 hits. It goes to show you what happens in the world of Japanese idols. One minute you’re a famous teen sensation, the next you’re last year’s model. Hopefully this is only a slow period and her next singles and albums chart better.

Best Repetitive Album!

I LOVED YESTERDAY - YUI

I LOVED YESTERDAY – YUI

We all know YUI as that artist who sung a few theme songs from the popular anime Bleach. She’s also known for her frequent use of a guitar, whether it be acoustic or electrical. Now I haven’t listened to any of her previous albums but the reviews were generally praising the album.s As for this album, there was anything but praise. Most people, including me, found this album to be so repetitive. The album started out good, but after so many guitar driven songs the album began to lose its flare. You can only use an instrument so many times before it gets old. And another little thing, she hardly ever smiled! And the cover wasn’t that great either sadly.

Best Collaboration Album!

DOLCE - Ami Suzuki

DOLCE – Ami Suzuki

I guess Ami’s the only artist to do so many collaborations besides m-flo but she’s the only one that I’ve reviewed. So she won hands down, and the album was great, and PINK! Anyway even though she’s done so many, it’s because her collaborations were so good that I added her. The singles for this album were very good, and so memorable. And the album itself was so fantastic and pink. From the synth / techno FREE FREE to the lone non-collaboration track if, this album is simply phenomenal. Although it seems that this is her last collaboration album it’s certainly the best.

Best Theme Album!

Lei Aloha - melody.

Lei Aloha – melody.

Only after one single was released did melody. decide to release an album. The result was Lei Aloha and it was darn good result at that. Even though this album didn’t do that well, the most important thing about it was its theme. The theme for this album was Bonds, and the tracks reflect it with both lyrics and music. It was probably her best album to date and her most emotional. What an emotional and profound theme!

Best Electronica / Techno / Dance Album!

GAME - Perfume

GAME – Perfume

From pop idols to Queens of Techno with the help of their producer Nakata, the group rose to popularity. After the release of their single Polyrhythm the steadily began to rise in popularity until they released GAME. GAME is undoubtedly the best electronica / techno / dance album without competition. With some great distorted vocals and superb flashy dance music with fun, energetic beats this album was an easy no. 1 hit and the best techno album.

Best Overall Album!

HEART STATION - Utada Hikaru

HEART STATION – Utada Hikaru

While I must admit that I am a little biased towards Hikki there’s no doubt that she made one hell of an album. After two years since her previous album fans were waiting for this album. This phenomenal album contained the child favorite single Boku wa Kuma, the 2nd most downloaded song in the world Flavor of Life, the theme song for a very popular anime movie Beautiful World with a Nissin Cup Noodle CM song Kiss & Cry, and finally the Kao Shampoo CM Stay Gold with the ever popular HEART STATION that was the only song to pass over 1,000 plays on the radio. The album is filled with beautiful songs with profound lyrics and tremendous emotion. One of the songs was so great that it was released as a re-cut single. But this album has such a high quality to it, and that’s why it’s so good. This album has also outsold her previous album, a first for Hikki. And the total physical & digital sales for this album and its songs total over 20 million, a very impressive record.

I hope you all enjoyed the first Best Countdown 2008 G. I know it wasn’t that good this time, but I’ve just been so tired lately it’s almost become a job, rather than a fun activity. But be assured that the next Best Countdown will be much better, and will include some more sections. Thanks for being patient, and I’ll be reviewing albums soon, get ready for First Love.

What’s In An Album Title??? Part 2 June 27, 2008

Well I hope that you all liked the first part of this article. I had fun writing it and I didn’t have time to finish it so here’s hopefully the last part. This section will cover a little more of BoA and will include Namie Amuro, Koda Kumi, and even Ai Otsuka. So get ready everyone for Part 2.

BoA is back up!

MADE IN TWENTY(20) – BoA

This little number was BoA’s 5th studio album, and yet another no. 1 hit. But what’s a little more interesting was the title. I mean where did the title come from, there’s no title track on the album, so it must be either spur of the moment, or just some title. But I guess this could be spur of the moment, but I think the title’s a little more than that. From the name it’s a little more personal, and there’s a little less restraint. I mean I guess this was to celebrate her 20th birthday, and a way to express her happiness, and how well she has it. This album also features some more R&B oriented tracks, and it’s a little more adult compared to her previous album. I really didn’t like this album that much but I must admit that she did put a little bit of herself into this album so that was nice. Overall though, it’s really to express herself as she has it made in twenty.

Queen of comebacks, Nami is here!

Queen of Hip-Pop – Namie Amuro

This album was considered her “comeback” album as it outsold her previous album, but I really think that PLAY was her comeback, but I won’t get into that. Anyway, this album comes from one on the tracks on the album, the very first one actually. Her previous album was all about her new style and such, this one was more about her defining herself. It’s almost as if she proclaimed herself the queen of her new found style, rather than a novice. I felt that this was a step up from STYLE and it was more edgier and more mature. As for the title track, it was edgy, powerful, and so so addicting. She’s definitely the Queen of Hip-Pop.

STYLE – Namie Amuro

After a three year period without a studio album, and her SUITE CHIC project, she released this album, her first venture into urban music. This album was a real defining album, she shed her pop-idol image and became a sexy, mature, urban adult. No more were her simplistic songs pop, instead she became immersed into the world of R&B and urban music. Despite this album not doing as well, and becoming her lowest selling studio album, it defined Namie as an urban artist, and put her back on track to regaining prominence. As for the title track, really called Namie’s Style, well it was very heavy in urban and hip-hop music. It wasn’t great, but I guess that was Namie for you.

Let’s not forget about the singer/songwriter Ai-Chan!

LOVE PiECE – Ai Otsuka

LOVE PiECE, another one of Ai’s wonderful albums. It was her fourth studio album and another album to include that infamous LOVE in the title. But like her previous albums, there was no title track. But I guess the title is all about PiECE, like from a puzzle. As you can see, the cover is made of six different sections, each a different color piece. There was a photobook with the album that included many photos with six different background and outfits, and each one was used to creat the cover, essentially creating a puzzle with different pieces. And album wise, there were many different genres in this album, each like a puzzule piece adding its own unique touch to the final puzzule, or in this case album.

null

LOVE COOK – Ai Otsuka

This album’s title was a little more on the personal note, well once you understand how she came up with it. But as always there’s that infamous LOVE part, but this time the second part is COOK. But why is that??? It turns out that her birthday is September 9 (9月9日), and that’s where the whole COOK came from. She revealed on Music Station that her birthday gave the title to the album. Anyway as for the explanation, it turns out that in Japanese 9月9 is read as kukku (クック), which corresponds to COOK. A cute and creative title, Ai-Chan is so cute!

But wait, aren’t we missing someone, like the new diva of AVEX, Kuu-chan.

null

Kingdom – Koda Kumi

After her best selling studio album and a year of entertaining singles, Kingdom was released. It was thought to sell out like hotcakes after the album was heavily promoted, many advertisements for Kumi, and the fact that there were PVs for every single song. But, due to a little controversy it almost became a flop, selling less than her previous studio album by about half the sales. But there’s no denying that this was a good album, but the real question is where did Kingdom come from. As she hasn’t said anything about it, all you can do is guess. Maybe she thought that she was becoming the next big thing, and that she’d even replace Ayu, making Avex her Kingdom, or even rhythm zone for that matter. And as for the title track, well all we got was a preview, and from that it sounded like a love song with a little jazz. Not much to add I guess, we’ll have to wait and see how the title track plays out in the future.

null

Black Cherry – Koda Kumi

Black Cherry, this album is what you could consider to be her biggest hit, well studio album wise. It was no. 2 on the yearly charts and it came in no. 1 for 4 straight weeks after its release. This is her best selling studio album to date, and the quality shows. But the real question is where on earth did the title come from. Prior to the album there was one final single released and it was Cherry Girl / Unmei and it was used to promote or push the album as the lead single you could say. And there was even a drama for it, I’m guessing to further promote the album the name Black Cherry was chosen, to go with the Cherry Girl. That’s my theory, but you’re free to voice your own. As for the title track, well it wasn’t released until Kingdom. It was very urban and almost R&B like, point is it was good. There was a lot of English envolved but at the end it got scary, but it did reflect the album’s mood if you wil; it was very new, sensational, and urban , almost pop even.

*DONE*

That concludes What’s In An Album Title??? Part 2. I hope you all enjoyed it, I had a fun time writing it. But before I go, there’are a few more things I’d like to say. One thing that I’ve noticed with the album titles and such is that usually with your songwriters/singers like Hikki, Ayu, and Ai, the titles are a little more personal and a little more thought out. Now that’s not always the case but that’s what it looks like. And as for those that just sing, like Kumi, BoA, and Namie, it seems that usually title’s are chosen for promotions or even just spur of the moment, with no real thought out reasons in some cases. But either way the titles usually reflect something about the artists, whether it be how they are, or even how they’re feeling. Thanks again for reading. Maybe I’ll do a part 3 later in the year, who knows I still have a lot more album titles to discuse with you all.

This post is somewhat of a filler post I guess, as I don’t feel like reviewing anything today really. But it is a little interesting. And after reading Stereo Love’s blog it made me want to do some post like this. So here it is:

What’s in an album title? This little article will focus on the title of albums, whether it come from a song on the album, or whether it’s just out of the blue; and also what it reveals about the title track and whether it was good or not. The real question however is is it pure driven emotion, just some title, spur of the moment, or perhaps some insight? But either way there’s a reason behind it, whether it’s obvious or not. Now for some artists, the album may come from their company, however absurd that might sound; but for some have more deeper, hidden reasons. But for now, we’ll review some basic reasons, and my thoughts.
First up is Hikki!

Heart Station – Utada Hikaru

Well we all know about this little gem, right? It was Hikki’s 5th Japanese studio album. But more importantly it was named after the song off a single of her previous single. And it’s a very good title. As the lyrics mention receiving frequencies of the heart, it gives the album a personal feel. However, I personally think she was trying to express her feelings threw the music, especially about the divorce with her ex. But I guess it also symbolizes a new beginning for Hikki. Anyway Hikki mentioned that Heart Station was a good name for the album because it was the overall feel. Either way it was a fitting name. And on a last small note, the song was fantastic and one of the best allusions.

Ultra Blue – Utada Hikaru

Originally released as her 4th Japanese studio album this has been the only Japanese album to not have the album name, full name, to come from an song. Anyway, to the title, I’m not sure whether it was actually from emotions or anything, but my guess it was named after her favorite color, which is BLUE, and the name of one of the songs. And when she was asked a question on what her favorite color was she said it was blue, and as for the ultra part, she said that blue sounded so lonely and it didn’t specify a blue, so she then added the ultra, and there you have it. As for the song BLUE, it was pretty good, sweet, and so simple.

Exodus – Utada Hikaru

Hikki’s first full English album, well once she reached stardom. But this album really gave Hikki a chance to express herself. As for the title, like Ultra Blue, it came from a song, or in this case it was a part of the song. In order to make the album, she moved to New York to record it. An exodus is moving from one area from another, often forced to for some reason. Now in her song, Exodus 04, she sings of moving from Tokyo to a new place, New York in real life. The point was this was journey for her in many ways, and it seems to have been successful. I’d like to say that the title wasn’t really just spur of the moment, it was emotional and nice too.

Time for Ayumi!

Secret – Ayumi Hamasaki

Here we have Ayumi Hamasaki’s 8th studio album. After only a few singles, two really, this once mini-album was turned studio album. Now this album is named after one of the last tracks on this album. I personally don’t think that the title track was that phenomenal but it was good, but the album was nothing short of genius. As for the title, well Ayumi stated that she wanted people to feel that they knew her better, like they knew her secret, which is very personal and lovely. I do think that it affected this album a little bit, especially with the first track, mentioning miracles and secrets. Overall, it was an attempt for her to become more well known with her fans, if that’s possible, but it was nice and very personal, go Ayumi!

Memorial address – Ayumi Hamasaki

Well, even though I said album, i think that this mini album would be a good example of what’s in an album title. This was Ayumi’s first mini-album under AVEX, and it’s a pretty darn good one at that. Anyway, this mini-album had a lot of dark inspired and sadder songs featured, most would be added to her latests A BEST 2 albums. But this album was really about how Ayumi was feeling about her father, who left her and her mother. And that’s really a lot of emotion was put into here, especially with forgiveness, Because of You, and finally Memorial address. And it was really moving and very emotion driven and very sad when you think about it. But the title did fit the album in this case.

GUILTY – Ayumi Hamasaki

Guilty was Ayumi’s latest studio album and her latest venture into music, really rock, but music will do. This album was very emotional, especially with the last song being, and considering the album was dedicated to a friend of hers. I have no clue whether or not Ayumi felt guilty, but that was the title track and one of the songs on the album. As for the song, i felt it lacked a lot, emotion, power, and climax, but it made you feel so sad and sorry. And that’s what you feel when you’re guilty, right? I did feel that this was one of her most powerful albums to date. This album was very heart wrenching and very sad once you when hear it all, and the lyrics. You might find yourself feeling a little Guilty with this album and it’s title. But the last track was really what defined the album, rather than the title track.

BoA is up!

THE FACE – BoA

BoA’s 6th Japanese studio album and and another no. 1 album. This album is really different compared to the previous albums above. I mean there was no title track here whatsoever. However, this was a little more expressive. The album contained many different types of genres of music, song wise. And it seemed to be a little more personal for BoA. But it was a chance to know the many faces of BoA, hence the title I think. It was pretty good, but I guess it was spur of the moment. Not much to add besides that.

That concludes this section of What’s In An Album Title??? Check back later for part 2!
