It’s all Love! was Koda Kumi × misono’s 1st collaboration single. It was released on March 31, 2009 and reached no. 1 on the Oricon Charts with 74,014 copies sold. This was Koda Kumi’s 43rd single and misono’s 13th single. It was released in a CD edition, CD+DVD edition, and a Fanclub CD edition. This single is also considered at triple A-Side single. faraway was used as the theme song for the live-action movie Subaru.

Tracks:
1. It’s all Love!
2. faraway
3. Tenbin ~Tsuyogari na Watashi × Yowagari na Kimi~
4. It’s all Love! (Instrumental)
5. faraway (Instrumental)
6. Tenbin ~Tsuyogari na Watashi × Yowagari na Kimi~ (Instrumental)
Review:
I can honestly say that when I heard Kuu was releasing a triple A-Side I didn’t expect it to be a rock song, let alone a collaboration. Anyway It’s all Love! is really a blaring messy pathetic excuse for a rock song. The opening isn’t really all that clear and honestly it’s not all that good. The rock arrangement really makes me question if it’s for Kuu, it sounds more like misono personally. The vocals are a little hard to hear over the instrumentals, which makes it hard to enjoy the song. And seriously the chorus sounds a little choppy, not all that exciting besides being loud. They would’ve been better doing a pop duet or R&B collaboration, not rock.
The main, and only, reason why I would get this single is faraway. This track is sung by only Kuu an
d that’s the best thing about it. Well the best thing about it is that it’s a heartfelt ballad. The epic piano chords, the playful xylophone, and the mystic bells, let’s not forget the regal strings. And as always Kuu displays an excellent range of vocals. What she doesn’t display so well is her mastery of Engrish “so falaway.” I have to say that despite that the song is remarkable and actually catchy. And the melody is just splendid and beautiful. The synth riffs during the bridge were unexpected but really wonderful, and Kuu sounded a lot better too for some reason. The snaps and background vocals really seemingly strengthened Kuu’s own vocals making them even better. The arrangement was just astounding too.
Onto the song by misono. Honestly I’m not really a fan of misono, I just haven’t hear her, but Tenbin ~Tsuyogari na Watashi × Yowagari na Kimi~ has just turned me off to her. Her vocals sound nasally and it’s horrendous. There’s hardly any variety and the only instrumentals for the most part is the guitar. Maybe I just need to give it another listen, but honestly this is one of the worst songs I’ve ever heard. No variety, no good vocals, and no good music. There’s nothing remotely interesting about this song.
Overall Review: It’s all Love! was a collaboration flop! I had such high hopes for this single, but after hearing it I just want to forget it. The collaboration might not be all that, given it needs a lot of work. Better vocals, better arrangement, and less choppy vocals. I think I want to hear That Ain’t Cool again. Kuu’s faraway is the only highlight of this single, and makes it entirely. Without it, this single would be more worthless than it is. misono’s song was just horrific. Seriously I get why she’s not as popular now, just listen to her vocals. Maybe I just need to hear her sing a few better songs, or her day after tomorrow work. Such a disappointment and total flop, how it hit no. 1 on the charts is beyond my comprehension. The only reason why I’m not totally failing this is the because I’m nice and that exquisite ballad.

TRICK was Koda Kumi’s 7th studio album. It was released on January 28, 2009 and reached no. 1 on the Oricon Charts with 253,346 copies sold. This makes it her lowest first week since secret back in 2005, this is probably due to more digital downloads and the decline in physical sales. It was released in two editions, a CD Only edition and a CD+2DVD edition. This album features a total of ten new songs, eleven including the bonus track featured on the CD+2DVD edition. The first DVD includes six music videos while the second DVD includes footage from “Dirty Ballroom: One Night Only” which was recorded on October 23, 2008.

Tracks:
1. INTRODUCTION FOR TRICK
2. TABOO
3. show girl
4. Your Love
5. stay with me
6. This is not a love song
7. Driving
8. Bling Bling Bling feat. AK-69
9. That Ain’t Cool feat. Fergie
10. Hurry Up!
11. Moon Crying
12. JUST THE WAY YOU ARE
13. Joyful
14. Ai no Kotoba
15. Venus
Review:
The album gets off to an explosive start with INTRODUCTION FOR TRICK. Following some background vocals, mostly girls talking and an announcer, things get a little more interesting. The music becomes more R&B & synth oriented with the heavy synth beats and claps, it’s actually intense. And Kuu’s vocals aren’t all that bad either. It’s one of her best openings, much better than Kingdom’s.
TABOO basically follows where the intro left off. This sultry sensation was released as the second single and is by far the best. It’s a rhythmic dance song that features heavy techno beats and distortions. But besides all of that, it also features an insane melody that’s the most infectious things she’s released to date. The vocals were great as usual, and they sounded so sexy. And the live performances were just incredible, and she looked good in all of them.
The first promotional track is up next and it’s called show girl. This was one of the two albums tracks that had a PV, and it actually was about a show girl. Moving on, after a listen you can hear why it was chosen to promote the album. It’s catchy and not too obnoxious. The tambourine beats and heavy synth beats were amazing as always, along with the brass and even the elephant trunk. And I have to admit that in this R&B song, Kuu’s vocals were excellent, not mediocre either. And the chorus was pretty light, which gave the song some variety. Although the ending was a little cheesy in my opinion with the brass and percussion I still like it.
One of the lighter songs on the album is Your Love. Theres an aroma of love surrounding this song. It’s pretty evident by the piano and the light beats. Not only that but Kuu’s vocals are pretty sweet and innocent, similar to anytime. The strings were sounded lovely during the chorus, but the chorus itself wasn’t all that catchy. It sounded very wonderful and such, but it’s just so simple and a little too sweet. The melody wasn’t really all that great, and the English didn’t help all that much either. This song is nice, but it’s not for me, perhaps I just need time.
Becoming a signature winter ballad is the regal stay with me. It’s a classical winter ballad filled with epic strings and enchanting vocals. The piano chords were nostalgic in a sense, and the beats gave the song a little edge. Overall I’d say that this is one of her most impressive songs to date.
I guess the title really says what this song is about, and one thing’s for sure This is not a love song. This mid-tempo track is pretty urban and modern as far as music goes. It features some heavy beats that are a little aggressive. The synth music is dark overall, and a little eerie. Kuu’s vocals weren’t really anything special, but I did love the ad-libbing in the song. I’d have to say that the melody wasn’t that memorable, and the fact that Kuu spoke Engrish didn’t help much either. The song did get better, but it was during the last minute. It’s a little disappointing for the most part.
Things begin to look up with Driving. I remember hearing the preview and I was blown away instantly. And apparently a lot of people feel that this is the best song on the album behind TABOO. The intro sets the tone of the song, which is synth / electronica. Although there were some vocals by a guy it wasn’t all that bad. The hypnotic beats were mostly techno oriented and thumping, catchy at the same town. As for the melody, well this time it’s about as catchy and as energetic as TABOO. The verses featured some nice vocals, and the distortions were nice. And the English wasn’t all that bad either, quite catchy really. The chorus was absolutely amazing. The up-beat dance music blasts away as the vocals, vocoder and all, mesmerize you; it’s pretty infectious overall. I really don’t think that Kuu has sung a song that features some many electronic and techno elements, the closest thing is TABOO. And the car driving at the very end was just awesome. This is the BEST song on the album, hands up!
The album sadly goes awry at Bling Bling Bling feat. AK-69. This song is a pathetic excuse for a hip-hop song. I really can’t take it all that seriously either. The percussion is okay, no problem with that, and the synth riffs weren’t too bad. What I had a problem with besides the R&B/Hip-Pop music was the English. It’s stereotypical hip-hop that’s so stupid. The lyrics are in English for the most part, with a little Japanese. But overall I find it to be repulsive and insulting. The sad thing is that during the performances, the crowd went wild.
Things get just a bit better with That Ain’t Cool feat. Fergie. I have to admit that I’m not a big fan of this song, but I also don’t hate it. The music is good, and the melody is actually catchy. The one problem that I have with it is the fact that Kuu hardly sang. The worst part is that when she sang, it sounded so out of place, and it was obvious that English wasn’t her first language. Fergie had a bigger part of this song, and in the PV too. And the English lyrics were good, but so repetitive. I personally think that this song was just so advance Fergie’s career in Japan rather than Kuu’s.
One of the faster and by far more aggressive songs on the album is Hurry Up! This song has a strong rock vibe, prominently featuring the electric guitar and some great percussion. It’s also one of the fastest songs on the album, the tempo is just astonishing. I loved the vocal distortions throughout the song, but overall it does take a while for it to grow on you. Kuu’s English during the chorus could have been better, but it was still catchy. The background vocals weren’t all that pestering either, so that was nice. Oddly enough though one of my favorite parts was in between the second and final chorus. It might have been slower and a bit relaxed, but the vocals were great, and the synth music was perfect.
I guess initially Moon Crying really sounded astounding, but after the release of stay with me, it’s lost its touch. The piano chords are still as memorable and beautiful as ever, and the strings are just as powerful and flawless. And while I still love the melody of this song, I have to admit that it’s a little mediocre. It’s nowhere near as powerful as her winter ballads, but it will suffice. The song did get better though towards the end when there were more instruments. And I guess it would’ve helped if the vocals were a little stronger.
The second promotional track on the album is the joyous JUST THE WAY YOU ARE. This sweet song exhibits the strings, which aren’t all that just strong, but rather support the song. The music is a fusion of pop and maybe a little R&B. The strings oddly enough sounded great with the all the claps. The song is pretty mid-tempo and very smooth. This time around Kuu displayed some wonderful vocals that sounded happy and relaxed. The melody was actually catchy to some extent. The chorus featured English and it wasn’t bad either, it could use a little work but it’s pretty good. The lyrics are very happy, up-beat, and just sweet. This is really an adorable song, perfect for promoting the album.
Initially the beginning of Joyful reminded me of Joy To The World, but after hearing joyful again I realized that this would be different thankfully. The electric guitar that followed afterwards threw me off a little as to what this song would be. After a few listens it began to sound a little like WIND and Koi no Tsubomi. That being said it’s safe to say that the song is pretty up-beat and fun. The electric guitar is pretty strong, but so are the strings, and the synth riffs sounded splendid. I enjoyed the melody but I really couldn’t get into the chorus after the English, which killed the song a little. On the bright side Kuu’s vocals were pretty big and vibrant.
One of the few new ballads on this album is Ai no Kotoba lit. Words of Love. I have to say that I was expecting a lot of this song, and truthfully it didn’t really deliver. Sure the piano chords were majestic, and the strings were classical, but it’s always like that. And I did like the newer instruments featured like the electric guitar, which sounded a little jazz-like. Even with that though the song is just so average and mediocre at best. Perhaps if the melody was better and if she used more of her vocal talents it might have been different.
The final song on the album is the cover of The Shocking Blue’s hit song Venus. This was included on the CD+2DVD edition as a bonus track and was used in a Vise CM back in 2008, she also performed this song live during A-nation I believe. Like the original this song is sung in all English, or Engrish for Kuu. The music is a fusion of pop and rock. The electric guitars are blaring in full force in this song and the synth riffs were just incredible. The melody is infectious as always and makes for one catchy chorus. Her vocals were amazing, but I still wish her English was better. Still a fantastic closer for her 7th studio album.
Overall Review: TRICK was sexy circus magic! This album is just what Kuu needed. Some great fierce songs that really define Kuu as an artist and bring back her ero-kawaii image. The singles of the album were amazing, although MOON could have been better. A few of the songs were either infectious or aggressive which really made the album enjoyable. I did however enjoy a few of the more light-hearted songs on the album. Still there were a few songs on the album that were just plain stupid and pointless, and very repulsive. For the most part though I loved the album. Most of the more aggressive songs were on the first half of the album, while the lighter songs were towards the end, but I still think the arrangement could have been a bit better. Overall I still have to say that this is better than Kingdom in so many ways. This is one TRICK that everyone will want to play again and again!

stay with me was Koda Kumi’s 42nd single. It was released on December 24, 2008 and reached no. 1 on the Oricon charts with 39,860 copies sold, making it her 6th no. 1 single. In all this single has sold over 61,403+ copies. This single was released in a total of three versions much like TABOO and features two PVs. The title track was used in a CM for au LISMO and a camera for SONY. This was also the final single in the TRICK Era.

Tracks:
1. stay with me
2. Winter Bell
3. stay with me: Orgel version
4. stay with me (Instrumental)
5. Winter Bell (Instrumental)
Review:
Versatility is one of Kuu’s strong suits, moving from sultry to stunning with stay with me. Like her previous winter works, it’s a winter ballad similar to Yume no Uta and Ai no Uta. And although I had my doubts about this song, even I began to fall in love with this heartfelt ballad. It’s by far the strongest ballad of the year, much better than Moon Crying. As far as her past ballads go, this is just as radiant, just as flawless, and just as phenomenal. As far as the instruments go, the strings are as regal and as impressive as ever. The percussion was excellent too, as well as the piano. Kuu’s vocals in this song were just so overwhelming and so powerful, all of that intense shear power. She commanded total attention, even with her English. Overall it was very dramatic and beautiful.
The lighter and more up-beat track is Winter Bell. This song features the bells, the keyboard, some percussion and the electric guitar. Here her vocals differ greatly as they’re not as strong, yet they’re more gentle and free spirited, similar to Koi no Mahou. It’s pretty energetic as far as winter songs go, and pretty catchy. That melody is just sensational and so catchy.
The Orgel version of stay with me is just a simple music box playing to the tune of the original version. It sounds very nice, so simple yet so magnificent.
Overall Review: stay with me was a winter wonderland. This single is very reminiscent of past works. It’s another one of her classical ballads like you and Yume no Uta, along with Ai no Uta. The instrumentals were just so excellent and flawless. Her vocals were intense and so powerful, she really displays her vocal talents. The English was a nice bonus and the melody was very lovely. The b-side was energetic and a nice boost, just what the single needed. Such a stunning and regal way to end the TRICK Era.

After a few weeks of waiting, the covers of Kuu’s latest album TRICK has finally been revealed. And I can honestly say that I’m quite shocked. Don’t get me wrong, they look great, but they’re so circus oriented. I mean Anna Tsuchiya just released her album with a circus theme. And then Kuu’s seemingly American counterpart Britney Spears has just released an album called Circus with Big Top themes and videos. And let’s not forget P!nk with her album Funhouse, an obvious allusion to a circus. Well whatever the case might be for such circus allusions, Kuu by far has the hottest, and strangest cover. Anyway here are the covers, a CD edition, CD+2DVD edition, and finally an HVM CD+2DVD edition.

- CD+2DVD Edition

- CD Edition

- HVM CD+2DVD Edition
So what are your thoughts on Kuu’s new album? Feel free to post a comment or two. And here’s the track list. So what songs excite you the most? And be aware that they’ve released 3 previews already, and they’re pretty good.

Hi everyone. From the look of the title I guess you know that that means break time. And I really had no intention of having a break but I have no control over this one. Yesterday while roller blading, I fell somehow, I think it was because the pavement was uneven. Anyway, I went to the doctor today and they said that I broke my wrist, left thankfully, my right hand is my writing hand. And I will need surgery but that’s not until later. That being said, typing with one hand gets very tiring fast. And the fact that school’s picking up. So posts will be somewhat sporadic. I hope you guys can understand. Perhaps within a month I’ll be able to post more. Btw, the re-reviews of MY STORY and Best ~second session~ will be put on hold.

TABOO was Koda Kumi’s 41st single. It was released on October 8, 2008 and reached number 1 on the charts with 66,569 copies sold, making it her 5th no. 1 single. This single has sold over 83,298+ copies. The single was released in a total of three versions: a CD+DVD edition, a CD edition, and finally a Playroom Edition, which features a different cover and only the title track and its instrumental. The first press edition if brought from HMV or Tower Records, a post card was given. The title track was used as the theme song for Women’s Wrestling Championships 2008, Music Japan CM, and the Nintendo DS game “Saihai no Yukue.” Oddly enough, the title track is actually know more for its PV, which features some rather racy scenes. This was her second single in her new era.

Tracks:
1. TABOO
2. Always
3. TABOO -HOUSE NATION Sunset In Ibiza Remix-
4. TABOO -Instrumental-
5. Always -Instrumental-
Review:
Honestly the best word to describe TABOO is SEXY! But really, it’s an synth/techno dance tune that’s the hottest tune since…ever really. You could call it a follow up to BUT, considering the genre and the PVs, both of which featured some racy scenes. But even though BUT was a dance song, I think that this is Kuu’s first venture into true dance territory especially with techno and synth. The overall is infectious along with just plain addictive. The beats are invigorating and the music is exhilerating. The verses are surprisingly catchy and feature a great amount of English. But what I loved the most was the chorus. It’s so infectious and actually somewhat of a drug, you can’t just listen just once. Anyway it still features those amazing beats, great vocals, and English lyrics. Kuu’s vocals were amazing and I loved how they were distorted. The bridge in this song was just amazing too, awesome distortions and vocals! This has got to be THE best dance song in ages.
A little lighter is the B-Side Always. It actually reminds me a little of anytime in it’s mid-tempo feel and then the up-beat nature of it. Kuu’s vocals are a little deeper here, not too much though, but it’s a nice change. The opening was all happy with some synth elements, the acoustic guitar, and some odd twinkling sound. I liked the clapping, gave the song a rather soft feel. The verses were pretty sweet, so cheery and happy. The chorus was surprisingly good, it managed to sound catchy somehow. It was so gentle overall, and the synth elements were amazing, not too heavy or overwhelming. I was actually shocked at how good it was. I originally thought it’d be just so-so, it’s not half bad, I think it’s better than anytime, it’s somewhat A-Side material.
The one thing I couldn’t stand about TABOO was the fact that it was so short, but with TABOO -HOUSE NATION Sunset In Ibiza Remix- you get an extended version. Not only is it extended, but it’s changed radically. There are more distortions and the use of an acoustic guitar present, not only that the synth elements are more powerful in this version. I personally think that it’s an ok remix, nothing really sparks my interest. But still it could have been worse.
Overall Review: TABOO was sultry dance perfection! This single could very well be the greatest thing since sliced bread. I loved how it was a full fledged dance song, somewhat of a continuation of BUT or maybe even No Regret. The use of distortions and those infectious beats were just exhilarating and so awesome. I especially enjoyed the B-Side of this single. Despite it not being dance, it still incorporated some synth elements making it better than imagined. The remix could’ve been better, but overall it was a synth paradise.

real Emotion / 1000 no Kotoba September 28, 2008

real Emotion / 1000 no Kotoba was Koda Kumi’s 7th single. It was released on March 5, 2003 and debuted at number 6 on the charts with 35,054 copies sold. Eventually, on its fifth week the single reached number 3 on the charts with 28,962 copies sold. In all this single has sold over 282,734+ copies. real Emotion was used a the theme song for the popular game Final Fantasy X-2, while 1000 no Kotoba was used during a cut scene. This single was not only her first top 10 single, but is also considered her breakthrough single. It would be her highest selling single until it was surpassed by Yume no Uta / Futari de…, and later 4 hot wave. This was the final single in the grow into one Era.

Tracks:
1. real Emotion
2. 1000 no Kotoba
3. real Emotion (Instrumental)
4. 1000 no Kotoba (Instrumental)
Review:
Even though I did originally hear some of Kuu’s Black Cherry material first, I actually fell in love with her after hearing these two songs, well they were a few of the first songs I heard. Anyway I did remember hearing the English version of real Emotion first, but I eventually stumbled onto the Japanese version. What caught my attention first had to be the English in the beginning “What can I do for you?” The strange yet inviting beats were infectious as the dance music slowly pulled you in. But than just as the verses seem to get better, BAM the chorus appears! And the chorus is to die for. It has got to be on the catchiest things from Kuu’s earlier years as well as the best. The instrumentals are fantastic too, especially the climax. It’s a must hear for any Kuu fan. And her vocals were pretty darn good too. As for the bridge, it was amazing! The guitar solo and a few vocals were outrageously good. You can see why it was chosen as the theme song.
Hands down, 1000 no Kotoba lit. 1000 Words is Kuu’s best ballad from all of her earlier works. The music is undeniably southing and flawless. The strings give the song a true ballad feeling, and seem to give life to the song. There might be some chronic beats in the song, but they fit so well. The vocals are so stunning and seemingly perfect, but that’s just for the verses. The verses were beautiful and were perfect. I especially loved the vocals, sporadically placing some power. But the chorus was just astounding. Not only were the strings in complete perfect, but so was the acoustic guitar, they made for one impressive duo. Kuu’s vocals also showed some strong emotion and such power when singing. This song was perfect from beginning to finish. It’s still one of her most phenomenal ballads to date in my opinion.
Overall Review: real Emotion / 1000 no Kotoba was a stunning single. Up until her 12 singles collection, it was by far her strongest and most powerful single. I still believe that it’s one of her best singles, especially if you appreciate all of her old material. While they were contrasting songs, one up-beat and blaring, the latter beautiful and powerful, they made one beautiful single. I can see why it ended up outselling her album grow into one and as well as why it was one of her most popular singles. What a magnificent and perfect way to end her grow into one Era.

TABOO PV September 19, 2008

After a few days of the promo, the official PV of TABOO has been released! Now that being said, to date, this is one of her most promiscuous videos ever! I mean the dance moves are nice and all, but most of the video features some taboos, maybe that’s the purpose of it, kinda sneaky and a little ironic too. It features some rather slutty yet amazing cool bathroom scenes, well Kuu looks good, nothing too naughty. And to top it off, lots of girl on girl kissing, that and some guys kissing too; so please don’t comment saying that you hate it because of that. Comments are appreciated, but no hateful comments. The video is a little bizarre but it’s good, provocative but good. It’s definitely more naughty and a hell of a lot hotter than BUT, and a better dance track. Just give the video a shot. I know that it features some social TABOOs, but it’s worth the watch. I just wonder how the Japanese media will deal with it. Maybe the -ANOTHER EDITION- of the PV will be less provocative. So what do you think?
